Maxtor or Seagate?

I have to choose between one of the following drives.
There is almost no difference in price between the two drives.
The seagate seems to be quiter and has a higher resistance to shocks.
While the maxtor seems to be a little faster.
At least this is what I found from their respective datasheets.
Which one should I buy?

Both drives have the following specs: SATA 150, 80.0GB, 7200RPM, 8 MB Buffer

SEAGATE ST380023AS

MAXTOR 6Y08MO
 
I'm not sure where you're getting your data on shocks, etc from... It's always been my experience that to acheive any noticable speed difference between HD configs, one must be upgrading to Raptors or Raids. If I were in the market, I'd first be looking at price/space, what I need, and lastly the "speed"

8 meg cache is always a safe bet too. Either should be a fine drive, though I have never seen a dead Maxtor.
 
I always like Maxtor unless the Seagate is at a really good price which you already said they are mostly the same in price.
 
I dont see the real world difference in speed, but I am a quiet freak...

therefore, all my home machines run with Seagates...

As a consolation though, if I had to go with a different drive, I would go with Maxtor above WD

I have 14 Seagate harddisks in my file server and have had MANY more in my days. I use only Seagate in the systems I make for people and have yet to see a dead Seagate in my lifetime.

On the other hand, I have many friends from school and at work that have their Maxtors die within a short life...

As always, your mileage may vary. 🙂

I've got Maxtors, WD Special Eds and have recently added 2 Seagates. As far as I can tell there is no felt difference in speed. They all have the 8 meg cache and they all feel the same when loading, moving files etc. Speed differences can be seen in benchmarks but unless I can feel it I don't consider it a big deal. The Seagates are super quiet. With a 3 year warranty and at .78 cents per gig they are an excellent storage solution... if they hold up for any reasonable length of time; they are still too new for the reliability to be determined. If I had to rank them I would put WD at the bottom only because I've had 3 out of 5 go bad within the first 24 months. I've had 1 out of 6 Maxtors go bad, but that was after 3 years and it was a spare that went from PC to PC and got tossed around more than normal.
 
I personally own Maxtor drives, but Seagate is well respected. The main reason I went with Maxtor over Seagate is the price. If they are nearly the same price, I would take the Seagate drive 10/10 times. Best of luck to you
 
I have had both Seagate and Maxtor drives go bad. The Seagate just quit, and I lost everything that wasn't backed up. The MAxtor limped along for a few days, and I had ample time to back everything up. Maxtor's RMA policy is great. Just give them your CC# and they ship out a new drive. You put the old drive in the packaging that they send you, and it is a done deal. I have not RMA'd anything to seagate.
 
yeah maxtor, i used to be a wd fan but after i got a new 160gb wd doa, i wasn't really impressed anymore, the only thing i like is their raptors...
