Maxtor or IBM?

Hmmm... Tough one. I was planning on going with IBM, but now I'm hearing about all sorts of problems with them. But I haven't heard of any with Maxtor.

But how do the two perform against each other? I haven't seen a single comparison between the high-end drives of these companies...

If you know of any comparative benchmarks, please let me know.

The new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 are on par with the IBM Deskstar 75GXP's according to numerous reviews. I'd just go with Maxtor to save a bit of money. 😉
 
I'd go with the Maxtor again, if I had to. I'm very happy with mine. It's very quiet, and apparantly, just barely slower. IBM seems to be suffering from a rare quality lapse with their 75GXP, so Maxtor is probably the way to go.

that's too generalised a statement! there may have been some problems with the 45Gb model but not with the other sizes in the range.
 
what kinda problems the IBM 45gb have ? I wanted to buy one since here where i live the 60 gb is too expensive....
but if there is something wrong I might turn to quantum +AS maybe...
 
From experience and results of more than 60000 tested disks i would recommend Maxtor...

After the extensive testing that my company have conducted i know that the Maxtor drives are more reliable than IBM's, and no, the problems are not only with the 45GB drives, actually, the problems occur with any of the DTLA drives...

Now, of course, not all drives have reliability problems, but i do believe that IBM QC is nowhere near Maxtor QC...

they are both good drives...i dont think you can really go wrong either way...i would say get the one with a better price
 
I would listen to PCresources, and would also be happy to buy from a company that stands by its products like Maxtor. however, I have used IBMs and am not sure quite what the problem is with the DTLA drives. is it not simply in the controller not getting on with Via chipsets?

I've always gone with IBM but maxtor is also very good.
 
Maxtor here too.

Well after some reading in some forums. They says the problems are with the bx chipset, 686b and highpoint if I remember right. I think there are some more, but I don't remember. But well, I have had one 30 gb die, but that was on 686a so I guess there is some problems there as well.

The problem occurs on other controllers to i have seen it on P4 boards, on HiPoint and Promise controllers, and i am sure that there are other controllers that will have the same problems with DTLA drives...

Even if your controller has no problem with it that does not change the fact that IBM QC is bad, actually, i am not sure if it is the QC or the actual quality that is bad, in either case it means unreliable disks...

I have a pair of 75GXPs, a 30Gig and a 45Gig
fantastic drives..but if I were buying new I think I'd go DMax+60, they are suppose to be alot quiter, and performance is very close.
 
I've had 3 maxtors go bad on me within a year. None of which were up and running for more than 15 days before they died.

but...I've had 14 gig 14gxp ibm up and running fine, and I've had it since November of 98.

So on a personal note, I definitely say go IBM, but...I have a friend that has had t Maxtors in his system for a year with no problems...so it's all subjective I suppose.
