Maxtor One Touch Backup

Hi, I need advice! A friend's Maxtor One Touch III backup drive failed him and so here's what I discovered:

I checked the voltage of the power supply and it’s working fine; however, I noticed that whenever I turned the drive on, the LED on the power supply would flicker, I turn the drive off and the light becomes solid again. So, after removing the drive from the case, I tried powering up the case electronics and sure enough, without the drive, the lights came on and the LED on the power supply remained solid. I'm guessing this means the hard drive is shot??? Or, how possible is it that Maxtor’s case electronics won’t work under load?

He also has a failed laptop, but wanted the hard drive. Are laptop drives compatible with destop drives; or, in other words, can I install the laptop drive in the Maxtor One Touch III backup drive case, are the voltages and plugs/interfaces the same?

thanks,

John
