Maxtor is making a annoying hum. Do those Maxtor HD speed programs fix this>?

I have noticed this annoying hum coming from the HD. Its like it is pulsing or something. I have heard there are programs available that allow users to lower the dba of there drives. Anyone have any ideas?
 
I haven't used any of those programs and I don't like the idea behind them.
As for the hum, it might be the drive is simply vibrating in in the case. You might try tightening/loosening the mounting screws. Also, keep an eye out for errors. If this is a new hum, it might be a sign of something wrong with the drive.
