Maxtor HDD is clicking on bootup

A friends computer decided to poop the bed on him at school and the HDD no longer goes through the bootup. It stalls after the bios check and I can hear a not so nice clicking sound. Does this mean the HDD is pretty much messed up? Anyone else have this problem? Any help or links are appreciated, thanks.

Ive had this happen to me before with older drives that went out or are close to going dead. I would goto the manufacters site and check the faq for any related material on the sound. Also, check the serial number on the drive and see if the drive still has a valid warannty. Most drives have like a 3-5 year one. And in most cases if you send in an older drive they will replace it with something bigger and better at no cost to you.

Bud,

It just recently happened to me on a Maxtor 13.6GB I have! I RMAd it no probs!

Maxtor was pretty adament that it was a dead drive! It would just click, click, click and freeze the BIOS for minutes. SMART could not read it and neither could Windows or nothing. If your warranty is still good, RMA it?

Maxtor RMA site

Good luck,

thanks all.. called maxtor and they will replace. Too bad all the data is gone (backups are for suckers.. oh wait thats me in this case)

Are you going to backup next time around?

Backups are a pain in the head. But with hard drives being so cheap I keep an extra one in my pc and copy the entire C drive to it about once a week. Sort of painless way to do it.

Good idea emjem,

Lucky for me I had nothing on it (I just got it in a trade and it was DOA), but Maxtor only took 2 days to get me the replacement and it rocks!

Backups are a good idea though!!!!😉

I also had a 13.6gb maxtor die, started making a whole bunch of noise and was running extremely hot. It's dying, but maxtor is pretty good with RMA's, I filled out the form online and they shipped it out the next day with like 3 day airborne shipping.
