Maxtor external relacement

I had a hard drive failure on an external that I purchased 3 years ago, I got the case opened and plugged another drive in, the drive powers up but my machines will not see the drive. The model is a personal storage 5000 USB/1394. I tried both WDC and Maxtor drives.

I did try and force the XP machines to search for new hardware, I have not tried in an old 98 machine. Maybe I should format the drive seperatly then install?
 
You just need to partition and format the drive - a utility should have come with the external or you can DL from the mfr's site. Perhaps you could even do with the drive management tool in the Control Panel.
