From their most recent press release:

Effective October 1, 2002, all Maxtor desktop drives will carry a one-year standard warranty.

Why are they doing this? Are there next generation of drives going to breakdown that much, or are they just cutting costs?

The important question is: Does this affect all current drives that have been manufactured in the past two years or only their new line when they arrive?

If this affects the older drives Maxtor is finished in my book and it is Western Digital all the way. That is a real shame too because every Western Digital drive I have ever dealt with has failed and every Maxtor is still going strong. To show my support, I just ordered a Western Digital 80GB SE drive from Newegg and I'm confident that if I have any problems in the next 3 years I am covered.

Bottom Line: Very very very poor decision on Maxtor's part and I am personaly disapointed due to the fact that I was a die hard Maxtor advocate until 5 minutes ago.

Yeah, the only reason I tend to favor the Maxtors over Seagate & WD is because of the "no quibble" RMA and 3 year warranty. They make RMA a breeze, but only 1 year???

I don't think that they could get away with giving people less warranty than what they were promised at the time they purchased the drives, as they'd just be inviting breach-of-contract (?) lawsuits.

I hope this isn't an industry trend and that the other manufacturers don't follow suit.

BTW, if anybody wants to let Maxtor know how they feel about their change of warranty plans, their PR dept can be reached at pr@maxtor.com.

Actually I think they got hit hard by the Quantum fireball RMA's. These drives have been dropping off like flies the past few months. Its just that its the Quantum that they purchased and not the actual Maxtor HD's that have been bad. The CEO probably did something very stupid like look at the total number of RMA'd drives including the Quantums lately and decided to drop the warranty. At work out of 500 computers, almost out of the past two years, all the drives that have died have been Quantum's......yep ALL of them. We still have a good bit...20% that are Seagates and another 20 or so that are Western Digital.

I had to replace a client's 60 gig 7200rpm Maxtor drive after it died only 14 days after being installed! Sure, it was obviously a lemon, but it really ticked me off.

Looks like I won't be buying any more Maxtor drives. If they can't stand by their products- why should I? Even the IBM Deathstars are under a 3yr warranty!!
Oh well. I sent them an email (to the above addy) - if I get a response I'll share it here.

thanks for the heads up

I had to RMA a WD drive already - no hassles at all.

Well, I've been wanting to switch to SCSI for awhile now. More reason to to Seagate now.

On a side note, I had to RMA a WD800JB a little over 3 weeks ago and have yet to get it back. WD stated it would take them 9-11 days to return it after they receive it (2 day air Fed Ex). I really hope I get it by next week...I'm starting to lose hope :/ I'm runnin' outta storage! waaaaah

This is NOT the direction they want to go if they seriously want Serial ATA to be a contendor in the Enterprise drive arena! I really hope other manufacturers do not follow suit on this.

SATA isn't designed for enterprise storage. SCSI is (and will be for a very long time) king here. Ultra 640 SCSI is already on the drawing board. :D

As far as the Maxtor Warranty issue, frankly I don't give a damn. I've never liked their crappy IDE drives anyhow.

Cheers!

Why are they doing this?
Why do you think? Maxtor are notorious for breakdowns, that's why.

They probably got sick of all the RMAs they had to process.

Looks like it's WD for me.

I'm still a bit scared of Seagate's IDE line after having deal with loads and loads of broken Medalists and Cudas.
I have a broken GXP75 30 GB, but like someone said, at least it's under warranty.

I remember a story on this forum of a guy who had an 8gig maxtor way back when, and before the third year on his warranty was up, it died on him. So he called up Maxtor to do an RMA, and he got a 20gig, faster RPM drive back. Then in the third year of owning that 20gig drive, it died!. So he sent it back and what dose he get? a 40gig drive :Q. I think maxtor would have been better off doing something about the roll over warranty issue, they have most likely been loosing large amounts of money on the RMA's for quite some time now off stories like this. It's amazing how many hard drives die these day's though, I've had 7 different drives die on me durring computer builds, and they were not all maxtors. If it were not for such a high demand on the drives I dont see how companys could ever make a profit off HD's.
