Maxtor drive failure imminent?

Chkdsk went crazy on my 200gb maxtor last month. It spent over 20 minutes fixing supposed errors on the disk. Afterwards I lost some files, but nothing major. The weird thing is that chkdsk is always running on that particular drive whenever I boot up. I read into this about the 'dirty flag'. I tried clearing it through several methods described on google and nothing seems to work. Is this a sign that something is terribly wrong with my drive? I also tried running the Maxtor diagnostic program but it just hangs when it is detecting the harddrive.

Well, the first sign that something is terribly wrong with your drive is the big label on it that says "Maxtor." 😉

Have you checked the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive? That should be a good indicator for anything physically wrong with the drive itself.

Maxtor and M.T.B.F. ,Mean Time Between Failure, are not things that go together very well. Of the two Maxtor HDD's I have had they didn't last more then six months. I would get a new HD and dump all the data from the Maxtor onto it.

Well according to SMART, my harddrive is okay, but some of the values are alarmingly high. Also not visible in the picture is "Run Out Cancel" which is at 180 in the "Warn" column.
