I will start searching for reviews now that this seems to show that people prefer the Western Digital drive (and I can see why)...but to find tests, I will search for them. It is interesting to see your results...both show times that you probably won't notice between the drives, but just to be sure i'll look around (beyond StorageReview.com). As far as the noise goes, how would you rate the dB/A? I mean, if you know how to measure that, bigpow (or anyone). I will surely find that in a test, but I thought i'd ask. However, I am not out to build a silent PC, and I generally have music going when i'm on it...that and I was never bothered by loud, old drives :p.

Its especially hard cuz we always go with Maxtor or Western Digital. If I was to go with what we know is good, it would be Maxtor cuz we have 1 Western Digital drive (one with more than 10gigs total space) and 2 or 3 Maxtors that were and are still great. Thanks for your inputs, guys!

I don't have anything that can measure the noise level.
To make things worse, my ThermalTake Volcano 9 is a lot LOUDER! (even at only 3K RPM)

Buy whatever's cheaper, you'll be happy. (btw, you sure you don't want something bigger than 80GB? I had the same thought when I bought this WDC 120GB and now look at me, getting another 160GB)

When i had my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 gig HD with 8 mb of cache a while back it was pretty fast but after i bought the WD1200JB for a lot cheaper the WD seemed faster in my opinion. The reason i brought the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 gig HD back is because it was more expersive than the WD1200JB. So thats why i kept the WD1200JB. One thing i notice that is faster on the WD1200JB is when i am defragging and scanning my hard drive for viruses i can still like surf the internet, etc without to much of a slow down. Plus the WD is a lot quieter.

Wasn't the DiamondMax Plus 9 the drive that got a 6/100 reliability rating from StorageReview.com?

I have one 80GB WD SE, and 2 Maxtor +9 80GB drives. They're all fast but the Maxtors are quiet--I can't even hear them at idle, and seeks aren't noticable unless I'm listening for them. The WD emits a constant high-pitched whine, just like all hard drives used to do, and seeks sound like a muffled ratchet. As for quality, I think it's a toss up.

Well now I have to get the hard drive, Western Digital SE, right away! I massive night of storms in Minnesota a day or two ago left my computer dead in the water after lightning struck our house. Both PCs are home-built, but the other one was usable and--get this--it was 10 feet away from the lightning!
