Maxtor DiamondMax D740X "Silent" is driving me insane, I can't sleep!

It's the "silent" model with the "Hydrodynamic Bearing motor technology". The high pitched whine it emits is seriously driving me crazy. I can't hear it when I'm at the computer right next to it, but when I go to the next room to sleep it's loud and clear. So loud I CANNOT SLEEP. Now I either wear ear plugs or shut down the computer and disconnect the drive.

This sucks. I guess there's nothing one can do about it? Have to start looking for replacement... any suggestions for a fast non-whiny(!!!!!) 80+ gig drive?

What is the model of the drive? Cuz I remember a forum member saying there is the 6J and the 6L or something like that, and the 6J is loud, but the 6L is suppose to be the quiet one.

I still can't hear my pair of Barracuda IV's and they've been running just about non-stop for well over a year now.

Pick up a Seagate Barracuda IV, silent unless you are holding your ear to it and trying to hear it:D

I know exactly what you mean! I have the 60GB version and it too emits a high pitched whine that is driving me crazy. I didn't really notice it until I got serious about replacing my fans and PSU to reduce the noise. In terms of volume, it's not that loud. But the frequency makes it bore right through any game or music sounds (unless really cranked).

I too have been considering a replacement just to rid of this noise.

Why do you keep it on all night. There is no advantage, unless you are running a server. Turn it off and get some rest. Typing in caps is a sign you are over stressed about this.

Also from Maxtor:

Thank you. Obviously not many in this thread understood exactly what kind of noise we're talking about. Also I hope this proves I'm not crazy ;)

Shutting off the computer is not an option, don't you think I would if it was ;)

And about the Maxtor's suggestion the drive is malfunctioning... it's been running for months now without any kind of indication of anything abnormal (except the whine..).

Probably the bearing isn't tight in it's place. So the whole bearing spins instead of just the races of the bearing.

if you can notice a noise from that drive then you got a disfunctional one. how hard is it to send it back?

Without a doubt, Seagate Barracuda IV, or V if you can find one. Bloody excellent.
