MAXTOR can go to hell !!!! UPDATED

I hate Maxtor. Had 2 drives fail on me. One in my home computer is still running but is loud as hell. One in my cousin's computer I put failed and had to get other one. And also had failed external HD by Maxtor that I connect to my laptop. I lost 80GB of data.. 🙁

I still have WD's external drive running strong.

So no more Maxtor experiement for this user!

I have four WD hdds in my comp, and one in my bro's PC. I've never had any problems with WD so far, so I'll keep buying them. If I ever have to buy another brand, it'd be Seagate. I don't like Maxtor either.

I lived in two different appartments so far... I have Enermax and Antec power supplies... The cases are nice and well-aired. I run AV programs regularly. There is no common cause for all the failures except crappy quality control... and BTW, all of them are Diamond Max 9 models... In all honesty, I have a much older Maxtor D740X HD which still chugs along nicely. But that is the end of Maxtor for me, and I will advise everyone among my friends to avoid this crappy company. Not to mention that RMA costs are too damn high...

I have one 20GB Maxtor drive which I've had for 3+ years which has yet to quit, thats the only maxtor I've ever owned so I can't judge Maxtor, but to all of you who say seagate is best you are crazy, the samsung spinpoint HDs are the best they are by far the best in terms of noise and are good high quality drives in general.

I've had 3 WD drives die on me. 3 out of 5 isn't a very good track record.

I've got around 12 or so Maxtor drives throughout my various rigs. I've never had one die yet. Still have a few dating back as far as 4GB.

My 4 Seagate drives are still going strong though. 🙂

Sorry to hear that.....lot of ppl say maxtors suck...but my current rig runs maxtors and they seem to be fine, I had an old 40gb maxtor for 6 years and was in working condition when I sold it.....i only had one wd...a 120GB one...it had a bad sector and wont defrag.

For those who say their Maxtors are good - what models are we talking about?

I might ask the Tech Support to send me a replacement from a different series than DiamondMax 9.

I feel for you but invest in a dvd burner and plenty of dvd-r or +r and you should be safe.
All hd can go to hell because none are as reliable as you think. It's like a car, it start out quiet and runs good but as you use it will start to break down on you.
Fvckman, don't have too manyshit on your hd or your screwed, I mean royally a pain the ass when it crashes on you. That's right, I only use hd for editing purpose and re-arrange files accordingly.

Always remember!

HD = temporary storage
DVD Media = permanent storage

Sorry for sounding like a tard 😀

My personal experience.

Western Digital IDE (3 Drives) = 1 DOA and 2 Dead within 3 Years of use

Maxtor IDE (3 Drives) = One dates back as far as 5 years, still working beautifully. Same as day 1. The other 2 are 3 Years old, and 2 Years old.

I've had a couple of WDs go out on me. My last one would randomly not get detected by bios. For some unknown reason, i would power my computer up a hour or so later and it wouldn't detect. Then other times, it would work perfectly fine.

I've had the same exact problem with 2 Maxtors....

One is STILL hooked up and in my case...but BIOS hasn't recognized it for weeks.

I don't keep hd that are older then 2 years, they get noisy and it is obsolete anyway
I no longer have 40gb, and even 60gb (ebay it for good money)
I am soon going to be replacing all my 120gigger with 160gb
then 250gb etc.
Keep with the time, don't waste it on obselete (outdated stuff)

DiamondMax 10!!

My 80GB I think is a diamondmax 9, and the 250GB is diamondmax 10?

Both are cooled with dedicated hd coolers that cool them at 33 and 26 degrees celsius respectively and that in a mATX box too.

You could buy some vantec coolers for your hd's for like 10 bucks off newegg....its a little bit of insurance.

This is all real anecdotal but whatever works for ya... Natually they don't publish failure rates of drives between these companies but 5/5 is a horrendous record so don't buy them (i woulda learned meself after 2 though).

Couple things a) maxtor would'nt be in business, selling less expensive drives BTW with high loss numbers b) maybe PSU or fans is screwing up your drives c) HEAT KILLS!!!!!, with these fast 7200 rpm drives it's easy to get well above 50C with poor ventalation. Check yourelf out on these fronts.

My acnecdote is WD and maxtors is whiney so i don't buy them after trying a couple times. I like seagates and samsungs and I really like seagtes 5 years warranty..that says something about thier product when they are willing to stand behind it so.

I have Maxtors, WDs and Seagates. My Maxtors are my most reliable drives. In this rig I have a 40gb Maxtor 6L040J2, in my HTPC I have Maxtor 54098U8 40gb and 6Y080P0 80gb HDs, in my Server I have a Maxtor 6L060J3 60gb.

My WDs are junk. I had a WDC 6gb drive that didn't like to run as Mastor or Slave to another drive, only as a Single drive. I've had 3 30gb Special Edition WDCs die on me. 1 of them was a RMAd drive.

And I'm iffy on my 2 seagates. I have a 200gb drive in this computer (ST3200822A) and a 30gb (ST330013A) boot drive in the server. Both of them are kinda flaky. They will work for weeks, months, then just randomly they reboot the computer and fail to be detected by the BIOS. It takes 2 or 3 restarts to get them back. I don't know if I will buy any more Seagates.

Maxtor FTW!

I guess you've been having bad luck 🙁

I have in my household
3x120GB 8MB DM+9
1x200GB 16MB DM+10
1x30GB 2MB DM+8
1x40GB 2MB D740X-L

No signs of death, performs well at acceptable noise levels *knocks on wood*

i have a maxtor dimondmax 8 40gb ive never had a problem in the 2 or 3 years ive been using it. i have friends that use the bigger 200 and 300gb models and ive heard they work very well as well.

I've had a few Maxtor drives, and thats all... they all died. Instantly. Never recovered data from any of them. They really need to do something about their reliability.

I'll admit, I've had a few WD's start to go, but they all went slowely, and I was able to recover the data before they officially died.

Vowed never to buy Maxtor a year ago, served me well thus far...
