Maxtor ATA100/7200RPM - HORRIBLE performance?

My HDD (Maxtor 30GB 7200 ATA100) seemed to be getting incredibly slow, so I decided to run the HDD benchmark under SiSoft Sandra 2k1. The results are disturbing:

Buffered read: 53 MB/s
Sequential read: 7 MB/s
Random read: 1387 KB/s
Average seek time: 37ms (average)

Notice the buffered read is 53 MB/s, which makes me think that this is not an IDE controller issue or something like that, but rather something wrong with the drive itself. Average seek time 37ms? Ive never seen anything like it. I have tried several different versions of the VIA 4-in-1 set including the latest and the ones packaged with the mobo, and they make no difference.

I have tried replacing the IDE cable, no help (yes, both were 80-conductor). Also, the drive is the only one on the cable.

Any idea what is wrong? My system is loading stuff slower than a stinkin duron 800 with sdram. ANY help appreciated.

Useful system info:
Athlon XP 1700+
EpoX 8KHA+
256mb pc2100 DDR
SBLive! value
Elsa Gladiac GTS 32

I'm calling maxtor on monday.

I've got a 40gig ATA100/7200rpm Maxtor and I got these results:

Buffered read: 79 MB/s
Sequential read: 30 MB/s
Random read: 4 MB/s
Average access time: 12ms

Are you sure DMA is working in Windows and you've enable UDMA mode 5 in the BIOS and on the drive?
