So I finally pick up an ultra ata 133 ide card in hopes to utilize my 180gb WD. I go through the boot up sequence in installing a 3rd party scsi or raid card (per maxtor's inst) while doing a fresh install of xp. the card is detected but when it goes to set up windows, it hangs in the screen before the License agreement. I've tried other hd's and apparently they are working (30gb and 40gb).
So i'm thinking it's the hd but when i hook up the ide cable to the ide channel on the mobo itself it works albeit at only 131gb; it works on the mobo's ide channel but not the ata133 card.

I have an intel d850gb mobo and my hd is the WD 1800. Can someon help me? Thanks in advance.

Is there a firmware upgrade for the Maxtor card? Because just because it is ATA133 dosen't mean that it supports the addressing for 128gb+ (but most are).

I've checked maxtor's site left and right but could only find what I already had on teh disc they supplied which contains teh drivers for winxp. I dont' know why it's not reading it. I'm dbl checking what i'm doing with what they're saying and it seems as though it would work...

Do you have the WD drive jumpered for Master or cable select? I have run into problems with WD drives jumpered as Master. Cable select seemed like the most trouble-free for them.

Yes, it does. LargeATA support is part of the ATA133 spec so if it doesn't have support, it isn't ATA133.

As Randum stated, check the jumpers on the WD drive. Wd has different jumper settings for master with a slave, and master with no slave. Have you tried installing XP on a different drive attached to the ATA133 card?

Also, if your version of XP doesn't have SP1 already on the CD, you may have to make one that does.

I had to install the drivers for it to show more than the 130GB limit on my ATA/133 card

Thanks for the response guys.
i'm able to install onto my 30gb and 40gb hd's but not the 180gb. If it's connected to the ata card, teh drive isn't even detected.
Randum, i think ive tried all combinations re: the pins. but i'll do that again.
Pariah,
How do you "make" a xp disc with sp1 on it? i have xp and then downloaded sp1 and installed it.

thanks for the link John. burned perfectly via the supplied instructions but still the same problem. I think now moreso it's the 180gb hd itself. i'm trying every position with the jumpers but nuthin'. If anyone else have any other ideas, i'd really appreaciate it.

Just some more info. installed Intel's application accelerator. 180gb drive shows up in there as a slave and shows the correct disk size but doesn't show up in "my computer" as a drive at all.

Check Disk Management and see if it shows up there. May just be a formatting problem

thanks for all your help in the other thread pariah.
hmm, how can i get to disk management?
I don't know if this info helps but when i go into the disk drive properties and under the volumes tab, I click on the "populate" button and it shows the correct disk size yet still nothing in "my computer"

here's the info in "volumes"

Disk = Disk 1
Type = Basic
Status = Online
Partition style = Master Boot Record (MBR)
Capacity = 171703 mb
Unallocated space = 171703 mb
reserved space = 0mb

***never mind*** Found it!!! thanks pariah and all who helped!!!

control panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Managament->Disk Management

Disk = Disk 1
Type = Basic
Status = Online
Partition style = Master Boot Record (MBR)
Capacity = 171703 mb
Unallocated space = 171703 mb
reserved space = 0mb

I think the bolded line is telling you that the drive isn't formatted, which would explain why it isn't showing up in My Computer. Oddly none of the drives in my 2 XP systems display any of the above information for any of my drives, so I can't verify that.

Edit: nevermind, all you have to do is click populate and the info is displayed. All of my drives have 0MB unallocated, so it looks like you just have to partition and format the drive and it will appear.
