maxtor 98196h8 Slow Seeking/Heat Build up

This maxtor drive is slow at writing and reading even though it's running UDMA/100. I tried to use the WVSET utility from maxtor to turn write verify off. I did this in dos command prompt inside of window xp because i could get the utility to work on dos prompt using a start up disk. When I run the program the seek light on the front of my computer light up CPU using 100%, CPU tempurature increase to 50C and increasing. I was afraid the CPU might overheat and turn off the wvset program. Anybody have similar problem?
 
just ran the powermax utility from Maxtor. Turn out there was a drive failure and it gave me a diagnostic code.

I don't know, even though it's failing, i can still save files on it. It just take a long time to write and seek. Should I continue using it?

Bought this drive on march 2001 and the warranty end on june 2004. Maxtor's 3 years life span is about right.
 
You could continue to use it, but why would you want to knowing
that it is going to fail soon?

Just check the Hot Deals forum for an inexpensive replacement.
