Don't forget that Win98 (WinMe too?) can only support upto 64GB on a single partition.

Not to mention that I"m sure many BIOS's may have problems with such a large drive.....
 
I think most people will be partitioning an 80 GB drive into much smaller partitions. It would be silly to just have one 80 GB partition unless you need that much in one partition for professional video work or something.

I ended up getting the 60 GB Maxtor from Staples for $169 + tax after $100 off in coupons 🙂

Just a year ago i got 2 hard drives totalling 17 gigs of space...that blew my mind back then...

Now im looking for an 80 gig myself...in another year ill probably need a bigger one 🙂
 
The coupons used were the $80 off $180 coupon that has been circulating around and one of the many $20 off $50 coupons out there. The $80 off $180 was supposedly only for a Yamaha drive but it has recently worked for many people on any order over $180 while other people get rejected. Also for some reason the coupons were able to be combined for $100 off an order over $180. Right now the $80 off $180 doesn't seem to work but it sometimes works then stops working then works again from time to time. Not sure why. The drive I got was the Maxtor 60 GB Diamondmax item #437119 at Staples.
 
From what I've heard it's more that fdisk doesn't truly support more than 64 megs...not necessarily any of the Win9x flavors technically. If someone has more specific info, I'd appreciate hearing it.
 
i was just kiddin....actually i have over a 100gigs in my home network....3 pcs. tho its hard to maintain all the junk i put in it and it swallows all my software in some recess in the disk dir. Anybody know if theres a program out there that can index stuff on your cds and hd so i can make a list and find what im looking for.
 
Actually anything over 6 gigs starts to become ineffecient in win98 (not sure of ME). Once you go over 6.4gigs the cluster size on the drive starts getting bigger than 4k. This can begun extremely ineffecient when storing a lot of data. Just look at how much space was freed up when you switched from FAT to FAT32. I know I freed up almost 500 megs on a 2 gig drive.

there is an app called WhereIsIt? that will do *exactly* what you need it to... the interface/procedures takes some getting used to, but once you have your database(s) built (it supports multiple catalogs if you want to separate software, stock photography, projects, music, etc) then all you need to do is a search and it will list every disc/directory that contains a file that matches your query. you can find it here: http://www.whereisit-soft.com
