OK, I did a search and didn't see this posted, so here goes.

Staples has the Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm DiamondMax Plus Hard Drive kits w/ ATA-133 controller card for $169.94
The model # on the box I got is L01J080G From what I've heard this the "fluid bearing" version. This seemed like a good deal considering it's a full retail kit AND includes an ATA133 card. They also had the 40gig models for $99.94, but those did not come with cards. Use coupons if ya got 'em! :)

Holy ****! I thought I got a good deal on a 5400 RPM Maxtor 80 GB for $80 (slightly used) at $1 a gig, but $73 for a 120GB?!? That comes out to $0.61 per GB - great for archiving! Has anyone ordered from Technografix? I suppose at the very least it might be useful for PMs...

I was wondering the same thing. Does that mean that this site is all a joke or something else?

I know I am a junior member so I hope posting this question is ok...

I looked around this site and tried a google.com search for Staples $30 off $150 Coupons... I did find one coupon code, but it appears to have expired Dec. of last year. Are there updated coupons out there somewhere and I am just missing them??? or have I missed out on them completely... Thanks

forget about Technografix. apparently the site is just designed as a testing ground for some website creation software. look at their info page. would have been nice if they put disclaimers on all their pages, though. I just happened to stumble on their maxtor drives page while looking through google for specs.

Thanks wlee,

Needed another HD, and this one's perfect. I chose not to use the 30 off 150, but instead used the free computer bag coupon and the 10 off 50 coupon.

Just as an FYI, I received this hard drive last night, and it wasn't the "fluid bearing" version unfortunatly, so if you are ordering it because of that, you might want to buy the hard drive separatly, as the kit seems to be a mix of both types.

Are you sure this is not the fluid dynamic version? According to Maxtor 80gb drives with "L" in the serial number denotes Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors.

L01J080G is the combo retail kit, with HDD and card.

For single drive retail kits,

BB motors:
6L020J1
6L040J2
6L060J3
6L080J4

FDB Motors:
6L020L1
6L040L2
6L060L3
6L080L4

Notice the second to last letter. That's the indication.

I just called up Maxtor, and the combo retail kit could contain either type of drive.

my drive had the 6L080J4 number so that was how I deducted it wasn't the fluid drive. Is there that much of a difference? I could probably take it back to my staples and try again for a fluid one.

Here is a review, including talking about the noise levels of FDB drives.

http://slautech.com/slautech/articles/477

Seems to be a substantial difference. But, the biggest noise makers in a case is probably the case fans or cpu fans, so having either hard drive probably doesn't matter in overal effect.
