Maxtor 8 meg drives- Is it 1 year or 3 year warranty?

Hey guys - I was thinking of getting in on that staples deal where I get the cdrs+160gig hdd for 80 bucks...I then was planning on buying an enclosure and sticking the HDD in it...

but I know that would put more "stress" on the hdd since it'll be moved around and I don't want to risk failure so that is why I'm wondering how long the warranty is on the Maxtor drives?

Do you think it'd be better if I could find a WD for the similar price and get that since they have the 3 year warranties? thanks
 
Most of the major manufacturers have gone to a one year warranty. Only their special editions come out of the box with three years. I think western digital lets you pay $20 extra online to extend your warranty.
 
Maxtor has a 3-year warranty on their DiamondMax Plus line as long as the drive has 8M cache and is larger than 120GB.

 
My 120GB 8mb cache maxtor has a 3yr warranty. It says so on theside of the box, so just check if you are gonna buy one locally.

NOT true, it's a 3-year warranty only in Europe, Middle East and Africa. North America has only 1-year warranty, unfortunately.

Put your SN in on their website and see when it expires! I have a friend with two Raptors that are *supposed* to have 5 year warranties, yet when I check on the website they show 1 year! (Expires June 2004) Guess what happens when the drive dies in September 04? They're gonna say your SOL...

I will call WD and ask them WTF this is about, you can be ASSured of that!

Correct, but you didn't finish reading the WHOLE thing:
Outside of EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), Maxtor-branded retail ATA hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year regardless of capacity or buffer size. Maxtor external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year with the exception of the Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS drive, which has a Standard Warranty Period of 90 days.

Well, I have two(2) 160gb Maxtors with 8mb cache. One has a three-year warranty and the other is 1-year only. Both drives are the same model drives. How do I know one is only one year? Entering the serial # (and other needed info) on their web site tells you how long the warranty is.

Maybe their warranty has changed but the last time I checked was only about a month ago.
 
thanks guys...So it seems its completely random what you get...

I think i'll hold out till there is a good deal for the WD since they are guaranteed for 30 years
 
I registered my hard drives online (160GB and 200GB 8MB buffer Diamondmax plus) and both of them have warranty that expires in 2006.
So I would say 3 years. However, the boxes that they came in claimed only 1 year warranty.

It looks like if you buy an OEM drive that is 120GB or greater and has a 8mb cache, you are covered for 3 years. If you buy a retail packaged drive, you get 1 year. Weird...glad I bought an OEM DM+9 S-ATA 120GB. 🙂

See, thats the problem. The 160gig drive I have that has the three-year warranty says it has only one-year on the retail package and even on the little brochure inside. The only SURE way is to actually look up the drive in Maxtor's website.
