Last night, I picked up a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 7200
10Gb hard drive @ Staples for $70 out the door. They
have the drive for $90, plus there's an in-store
coupon that takes another $20 off. You can find
cheaper drives with mail-in rebates or whatever,
but this is the cheapest 7200 drive I've seen available
for immediate purchase at a B&M that doesn't require
you to do anything but pick up the drive and purchase it.

Oh, and this is the retail kit. So you get the 80 pin
IDE cable (worth $5-7 by itself), the mounting bracket,
and the Maxblast software floppy.

Note: This deal will NOT be available on-line. The
$20 off coupon code won't work on-line. You may be able
to wrangle yourself some other comparable deal, I guess.

$70 for 10 GB? I'd rather swing it and get the Quantum LM 30GB for $100 after rebate. But, some people might just want 10 giggers. Dunno.

Yeah, if you're gonna buy just one drive for your personal
computer, I wouldn't go for 10 Gb. But there are lots of
reasons to buy a 10 gigger: Building a system to sell cheaply
or a system for a friend that just won't need more space.
Also, you could put 4 of these together for a super-fast
striped AND mirrored raid system (with 20 Gb available), for
about $300 including the modded Ultra66->FastTrak66 raid
controller (though I've heard mixed reports about whether Maxtor
drives work properly with the FastTrak raid controller).

And I have several of those Quantums that are around $110
after taxes/shipping AND waiting for the rebate to come. But
there's something satisfying about buying a drive off the shelf
and not having to worry about any rebates. (Plus the Maxtors are
MUCH quieter).

I'm not saying 10 giggers are for everyone. But I certainly find
myself needing them for certain purposes.

Why do you say you can't do this deal online? I can always get online to match any Staples store deal/instant savings thing..or do they not carry it online.

If only Staples carried horses. I am actually going to have to spend major bucks on something which is against my religion :)

Deal requires a coupon code that expressly says on the coupon:
"This code not valid for Staples.com online". Also, Staples.com
does not carry the 10Gb.

If anyone REALLY wants this deal call Staples online and have them look to see if they carry it. There are alot of things they can access that aren't on the website. The skill of your CSR will make a difference in the search. This is probably an IM product. Also, give the instant savings coupon a shot. Some will be successful at getting it honored. Try to get the coupon number from your local store before you call. Place your order and right before they start to check you out say ...oh yeah, I have some coupons and rattle them off ;-) If it kicks it out saying it is for stores only start wheeling and dealing.

I noticed in my zip code the 30.7 gig deal is gone on the website. I should have ordered more darnit.

La Bandita,
Whatever will you do if Staples goes out of business. It will be like your best friend died. If someone can't do this deal online then go in and try to use the online coupons in the store. Yes, it can and does happen.
