Maxtor 40GB won't boot from LAN image

At work I've been setting up a retired HP/Compaq D510 as a test machine. Its hard drive is a Maxtor 6E0L040 40GB hard drive. I boot up, hold F12 for the PXE network boot, and proceed to install the image as usual (via Novell ZenWorks). It takes the image successfully, but on the first reboot simply comes to a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I called HP tech support (commercial support) and they asked me to try updating the BIOS, clearing CMOS, and to also try installing Windows via CD and see what worked. I did everything as their tech guy asked, and while the BIOS update made no difference, I did find that if I installed via CD, the drive would boot into Windows with no problem.

I called back after having done this and reported what I found. I was told that since there appears to be no hardware problem, they will not exchange the drive. In fact I was told that HP does not recommend or support imaging as a means to install the operating system, but rather to use the OS disc.

I asked the guy if I had reached consumer support instead of commercial support, but no, I had reached commercial support. He put me on hold for a few minutes while he went to explain the case to his supervisor, but came back with the same answer. I asked how does HP expect corporate environments to prepare hundreds of computers, have us walk to each cubicle and pop the CD in? He laughed nervously and repeated the policy.

At this point it was nearly 4pm on Friday so I gave up. I may call back again this coming week, but in the meantime what can I do to see if this drive will take an image? So far I've done a quick zero-fill (first 300MB and last 100MB) and tried different jumper settings. The HP BIOS's IDE DPS self-test passes, as do all of Maxtor's diagnostics. I also did a full zero-fill on an 80GB Seagate that was doing the same thing a couple of months ago, but that didn't help the problem. Any ideas?

Is this the only PC you have the problem with?
If it is, it is more likely ZenWorks having an issue with the network card.

If the images works from CD then you need to look elsewhere.

I also tried the drive in a d530 with a d530 image. Same thing. And no, our image is not on CD. From CD I'm just doing a straight Windows install.
