Lots of those Maxtor drives are also the "buy 40 gig get 5 gig free" meaning they are 45 gig HDDs.

the reason why the 40 are actually 45s is that maxtor changed their fabrication focus from 10 GB platters to 15 GB platters. before they had 4x10GB, whereas now they have 3x15GB. and it is a true 45GB... none of that 1,000,000 bytes = 1 MB bullsh*t that iomega pulls on you.... damn they are cheap pieces of sh*t.

I got this drive back in the weeks with the OD pricematch/free zip drive deals and got the 45gig. I notice now that all the drives at my Local Staples do not have the free 5 gig sticker. So I think you have a 50/50 chance of getting the 45 gig. My buddy and I were able to get 3 45 gig drives total from them. Of course they are all ATA100.

I was able to get 3 of these drives several weeks ago...the front portion of the packaging had a sticker stating that an additional 5 gigs was included for the price of a 40 gigger. Most of the HDs I see at Staples now don't have the sticker so I don't know if will have the free 5 gigs.

The drive actually comes out to 46.1 gig when formatted.

After a week, Staples had a promotion for a free Iomega Zip USB 100 drive when you buy the Maxtor 40 gig, so I went back to them, showed my receipts and got 3 free Zip drives. The best deal I ever had with Staples. :D

Just got one ata 100 card cuz of the rebate limitation of one per household.

I wouldn't put too much faith into maxtor's mail in rebate. I sent in everything, but they returned a postcard saying I didn't send in the original UPC for the hard drive. I KNOW that I did.... oh well.

I actually got a great deal on one of these drives back in November during the holiday rush weekend. Office Depot had the 45GB Maxtors for $119. No rebate, nothing.. just $119. Plus, the free Promise ATA-100 controller. I still can't believe it.

Anyways, as far as the 5GB free sticker goes, I'm almost positive that if it doesn't have it, then you're not going to get the extra space. However, you most likely will get a newer DiamondMax Plus 45 (40GB version-model 54098H6). The Plus 45 is the newer 15GB per platter version of their hard drives. The older drives were DiamondMax Plus 40's, which had 10GB/platter. The Plus 45's are slightly faster, and produce less vibration. They're very quiet and very fast. And they make absolutely no noise when seeking. I have another system with a Plus 40 and it makes more noise and vibration due to the extra platter, I presume.

So, even if you don't get the 45GB version, you'll most likely get one of the newer 40.9GB Plus 45 drives.

Hey Some1x:

I just received the same postcard from Maxtor, saying that I forgot the original UPC , but I *know* I put both UPC's in the envelope. Have you tried to contact them about this yet? :|

Tigerbait, I had the same problem, saying that I missplaced both the ORIGINAL UPC Code, and the ORIGINAL UPC Code.. funny how they said I was missing the same thing twice.... I called them, and told them they were idiots, and that I sent it, so they just said, send us a photocopy (thank god I had one), and we'll fix it... and so, I sent one in, called back 1-2weeks later, and they said I cleared.. and should be getting the rebate in the form of a postcard soon...?

good luck to you

WTF? I didn't happen to make a photocopy of the UPC. Maybe they should let us know when they want us to send the rebate in TWICE. Could you tell me what number to call?

Thanks

Never had problems with Maxtor Rebates to include their free Abobe Photoshop LE giveaways...got them all after at least 8 weeks. Hopefully, I'll have the same experience with the ATA100 card rebate.

Cessna172,

You're right, the Model 45 plus are so quiet I have to bring my ear close to the case just to check if it's really humming and working in there. The only indication it's working is to see the blinking HD LED...It took me awhile to get use to it after using a Quantum HD.

The model 40 plus is a little bit noisier but the Quatum LM Plus is really noisy especially when you shut the computer down. It whines down like a jet turbine. LOL.

Same here, got that post-card saying that I forgot to send original UPC, which I did. I called them up and they told me to send a copy of it, I faxed it to them and got my rebate some time later. What a scam to send this BS to a bunch of people and see how many don't bother to have a copy of the UPC and lose the $50, it's a SCAM to those that don't get the Rebate.

Used to have to deal with some of these fulfillment houses when they handled rebates for the manufacturer I worked for.

Tips for any rebate: ALWAYS keep a copy of everything you send. Some forms even state that you should in the fine print. File the stuff in a manila envelope if you have to, but you'll want copies anyway so you know what number to call to bitch to when your rebate doesn't come.
STAPLE everything together unless the form specifically prohibits it. They run the envelopes through openers that slice off the tops, then the envelopes sit in huge trays.
If you just drop the UPC in the envelope, it can fall out. If you don't staple EVERYTHING together, things get seperated.
The floors of those places are probably covered with loose UPCs that dropped out of envelopes.

I tracked my rebate and it is on its way. Should be here this week, and I even have the check number.
