Maxtor 40GB 7200 - $94.99 shipped

I got on this deal too without any problems. Remember that on the Staples site, the item is listed as a 3-5 day delivery item. Therefore they cannot use next day delivery fees against you. You can weasel you're way out by confirming the item as a 3-5 delivery item and then proceed with pricematch.

Of course, a 1-day item they'll use next day on the competitor's price.

My 2 cents.

any chance when i call, a 'friendly' csr will just check the site and pm it for me?

or not even a possibility?
hehe

Everything from Staples was out of stock in my area, so I called Buy.com last Sunday and price matched this hard drive at 119.99. Buy.com has $15/$150 returning customer coupon, but the CSR insisted that I cannot use the coupon with price match. I asked him, "if I can't use the coupon, what's my incentive to shop from you rather than just pick one up from the local office depot?", and he said "I'll give you $20 credit back to your credit card account, does this work for you?" Of course it worked for me, so I got it for 99.99 shipped. They wouldn't accept $15 coupon but would give out $20 concession? Hm.. strange, but anyways, it was not a bad deal.

I JUST TALKED TO A STAPLES CSR AFTER I CONFIRMED "3 DAY DELIVERY AVAILABILITY" ON OFFICEDEPOT.COM'S WEBSITE
STAPLES CSR SAID "I JUST TALKED TO OFFICE DEPOT AND THEY SAID THEY ARE STILL OUT OF STOCK"

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Yay.. just picked up my drive for $100.68 ($94.98+tax) at my local staples store.

I went searching the 2 stores near me yesterday (wend), and both were out of stock. :-( So I called up both stores today, and one of them had just gotten a shipment of 5 of them this morning!! By the time i got there around 7pm, there were only 2 left.. 🙂

They were the 45gig ata100 drives too..

Sweet deal guys 🙂

oproot,

I have an email offering me the pricematch from Staples. May I ask how you were able to get the same deal (obviously with a coupon) from the local Staples?

Thanks,

fraz

dcdomain - Yes this has already been posted in this thread but as mcdull pointed out there's always over 200 posts in that thread.

People don't forget that you may receive one of the Maxtor 45GB ATA 100 hard drives instead of the Maxtor 40GB ATA 66 hard drive. Read the posts here for more info.

Also there's a Maxtor $50 rebate if you purchase their 40GB HD and an ATA 100 controller card.

frazzled:

All I did to get my drive at my local staples store was:

1) Walk up to the register with my drive
2) Tell them i wanted to price match with office depot
3) Showed them an online print out of the price ($119.99) AND a office depot ad (from the Sunday paper last weekend)
4) Tell them i wanted to use an online coupon code ($25 off of $100)
5) Showed them a printout of the staples.com website with the maxtor hdd added to my shopping cart (priced at $179.95) WITH the coupon code entered in, showing a $25 reduction ($154.95)

That's it. The sales person gave me no hassle, and only had to call over his manager because the price match took $60 off the original price. He just wanted to make sure he was allowed to do that.

One note though: The reason i had to show the online print out and the real Sunday ad was because they said they were stopping to take online print outs for price matching. Supposedly people have been fraudulently making printouts to price match by, ands its been costing staples $$$.

Hope this helps 🙂

if you really want this drive like i do, i just went through the staples store, rather then their internet store (1800staples instead of 18003staple) and they did the price match without checkin, but no coupon, so i got this drive for $128.XX.

All B&M staple stores will price match if you can prove it, but only some stores will except the online coupon codes. I just happened to luck out i guess? 🙂

spikemansd:

I wonder why you just didn't buy it from OD and pay $10 less. I believe they are still in stock in a lot of areas. Even if they are not today, they probably will be tomorrow.--esprit

when you pricematch the hdd,, do you still get the zip drive free, or was that just a one day thing for the day after thanksgiving?

oproot,

Thanks a million for the details! Unfortunately they were sold out nearby so I have to wait, but I got the pricematch at least. Just gotta be patient....😀

Has anyone gotten this drive from OfficeDepot in the Boston area.
I have several that are (finally!) going to be delivered on Monday.

Are they are 40Gb-ers or the 45s?

Kwad

staples should all these in stock if their web site says it is in stock for my area right?
or is it like OD's web site where it always says its in stock?

im talking to my second csr right now, the first one said (after agreeing to PM) that staples did not have it in stock!

hope that was bs cause i can always try other csr's...

hmmm, k later

john

[edit]
it would be awesome if the 40gb had an extra 5gb...

Kwad: It's all the luck of the draw on whats INSIDE the box. Maxtor packed some with 45G ATA100 drives and some with 40G ATA66 drives. No way to know till you buy it and open it up. AFAIK all the boxes say 40Gig.

Yeah.. my box had a sticker on it that said:

FREE 5 GB MORE
45GB FOR THE PRICE OF 40GB
PLUS ULTRA ATA/100

Im assuming all of the 45gb drives have this sticker... maybe im wrong? 🙂

ok, finally got a son of a gun deal after talking to 5 staples csr and calling office depot 4 times (talking to same guy at OD, he was a littel amused)...

Here are the scenario...
1) I called OD near my area and find 2 in stock

2) Called staples, and asked to pm the drive to OD, csr called OD and agreed to pm it, except he asked for me zip code and after he 'checks' he said it was not available in my area... interesting

3) for luck, i called staples again to pm the drive, gave him local OD number, he called and said that the sales rep at OD said that the drive was not in stock

4) I call back the same office depot, still 2 in stock (OD guy asked me if i called before, lol)

5) Called back staples, asked for PM... after being on hold for long time, said that oD's web site was incorrect (said that they called office depot, yea right)... i gave him local OD number, she came back and said the SAME OD i called just sold one and had one in reserve (im too stupid to have told them that they had 2 in stock) i hung up pissed...

6) Called OD yet AGAIN, talked to same guy... he was laughing... still saw 2 40GB Maxtor 7200RPMs inside the glass shelf... now im pissed

7) Called staples, they put me on hold at least 3 times (i think some of them were discussing it), i gave them the item number and my zip code... the csr said he had them in stock in my area... after i gave him OD local number, he came back after like 10sec and said that OD was out of stock... i got pissed yet again and told them to call again and ask for Frank (the name of guy at OD i talked to). Another different CSR picked up the phone and tried to tell me the same thing about OD having it out of stock (their excuse for the last 3 times i called and hadn't realized was that OD's computers displayed them to be in stock yet they didn't physically have it in stock... i think they were just assuming since OD's web site did that), and i just told him that i have called OD at least 3 times since the staples csr has just rejected me the last 3 times. I told him that the same OD guy i talked to at least 3 times in the last 45min said they had 2 in stock physically (could see them)...

they finally (after putting me on hold for like 5min) gave me the PM... i think they did charge tax on the $119.99 instead of charging tax after the coupon...

overall, i got the drive for $103.31... not bad for the drive at all, but im gonna have to talk to one of them later to credit my credit card for the extra tax they charged for the drive...

thanks for the deals, i think you guys should make sure local OD has it in stock (tell them to try to physically find the drive on the shelf), and give staples a call... argue with them if they said that your local OD was out of stock...

i think ive seen staples online price matching (if success, then you get an email)

but i doubt they would let you have a price match on this item through email
they think of the most weird excuses to try to avoid pricematching on deals like this

im on the phone with one of them right now about the taxing thing...
apparently the pm was to $122 or something instead of $199.99

gr... she just put me on hold and came back with some excuse about the friggin coupon being taxed or something...

oh well, im happy cause i was one of the 8000 people who tried to order a WD 40GB from buy.com
which was supposed to be $109 after buy.com's $30 coupon and WD's rebate for $30..

staples is great once you get through all the tough parts of getting an awesome deal pmed...

thanks all
