Maxtor 40GB $120 no rebate

Homerboy, since you want two, are you wanting to put them in a RAID setup? I ask because I ordered two specifically for that purpose, and have since learned that Maxtors are for some reason incompatible with RAID0 setups... they perform worse than one single non-RAIDed drive does. Anyone who is interested in this deal should do some reading in the discussion groups at www.storagereview.com. Apparently, neither Promise nor Maxtor would ever even admit to a problem, much less have any solutions, but some of the feedback I've gotten indicates that the newest drives from Maxtor (read the Plus 45 series) have solved the problem. Those of you who have gotten the "5 gigs free" version should be ok, as I would have to assume that they are the 45 series (the 45s are 15G/platter, vs. the 40 that is 10G/platter, so the math would indicate the 45G version would have to be the Plus 45 series). This brings me to my next question...

Has anyone recieved their drives from OD yet? Are they also shipping the "5 gigs free" version? I went by my local Staples, and they didn't have any. I ordered from OD, but it won't be here until Wednesday.

KR, you just printed the officedepot.com webpage with the 119.95 price? I talked to them and they said no I need to have my actually office depot receipt with me in order for them to pricematch. Anyone knows if you can use the coupons in the B&M store?

It's surprising how little stock a HUGE company like Staples seems to keep.

I think what we are experiencing here is the standard panicked repsonse from retailers when they are deluged with orders for a hot deal.

We don't want to sell them at this price......it says in our price match policy that we have to.....let's say we are out of stock !

Its the perfect repsonse and leaves the customer with no come back.

As a matter of interest has ANYONE received a confirmation that they are getting the drive ?

lilstevo:

I think it depends on the store manager if the B&M will accept coupons.

I just called my local store and was told as long as its a 5 digit numeric code, their registers will accept it.

Guess where I am off to tonight ??? 😉

Ok I ordered one thus far. Deal is too good to pass up:

40gig HD, ATA100 controller card SHIPPED: $137.25
Then -$50 rebate = $87.25... plus I'll sell the controller card for ~$30... can't go wrong.

Actually, if you want MIRROR, I believe that is considered RAID1. Everything that I have seen that talks about the Maxtor/RAID issue talks about RAID0 (striping), so I have no reason to believe that there is an issue with mirroring. And it's not that they don't work, it's just that the performance is so slow, it's actually slightly slower than a single drive alone, while striping with two drives SHOULD give you throughput almost twice as fast as a single drive.

I want to stripe, so I have my fingers crossed that OD is also shipping the "5 gigs free" version.

yes yes your right... RAID1

I want mirror... If I lose my 30gigs of mp3s (transferred all my CDs and COUNLTESS others (I work at a radio station) to mp3) I would KILL somebody. Need a safe backup and this is the case I think. TurtleBeach just introduced the greatest invention of all time to utilize my mp3 collection. (BTW... NO NAPSTER dloads)

BTW, I found a $40 off $150 coupon for staples. Gonna order the second round later today.

This is sweet.

I love Staples, but it has such weird policies vary from store to store/region. Some stores don't accept any online coupons some areas/CSR's won't PM over the phone - Wow!

well, just called 1-800-3STAPLES, got the deal to work! although not $90...

1)order part #428386
2)pricematch w/ www.officedepot.com
3)use coupon code deleted
4)came up to about $95 + tax -> $103 shipped (damn you tax)

not bad for a 7200 40 gigger

I am thinking about just going into a staples with the OD ad and do a pricematch. Is there a way to use the staples couples in the store. I though you can only use the coupons online. Which means that i will get the MAxtor 40gigger for $119.99. Any suggestions. How does price match work online. Do i buy at staples website at there full price minus coupons. then do a price match or can i pricematch instantly online and get the competitors price.

I just called Staples and the they are OUT OF STOCK. So i guess i can't do it over the phone, maybe the best solution would be to just order from Office depot for $119.99 and use the $10 coupon. = $109.99

That's funny.

When I placed my order with staples, she explaiend that they ship these from several locations. And depending on available stock in each location, that it could take up to, but NO LATER than the 4th of December to get the drive.

If you can't get it from staples, get it from Office Depot like you said.

Then go to staples and buy the Maxtor ATA/100 card (49.98) and some clips (.16) to bring you over 50. Then used the 20 off coupon and file the rebate for 50 bucks.

This will make you another 20 bucks plus you can auction off the controller card for another 30 or so.

I have mentioned this in this thread:

mmm 40gigs for $96 shipped. Thanks all.

this should get here the same day as my $26 5 port 10/100 linksys switch.

i love staples.

I went to the B&M here today and there are 2 in the shelf. They have the 5 free gig stickers also. I should get mine tomorrow and I think I may go for another.

Staples says Out of Stock for middle Tennessee. (37042)
On the other hand the folks at OD were very polite and there is that $10 off coupon.
There is nothing wrong with that deal even direct from OD😉

Well staples is OFFICIALLY OUT as of right now.
The CSR suggested trying bac in 3 days, as she often sees things like this refilled by then. Unlikely but whatever.

Who's got a coupon for Office Depot? I'll jsut buy the $119.00 one from there.
PM me please.

The best thing to do is order from OD with $10 coupons of, then buy the controller from staples.com with $20 coupon and get the $50 rebate, very simple and easy. thats what i will be doing tonite. Oh yeah i called staples and they are out of stock indeffinately. Mostlikely until the sale at OD is over.

I got mine today at Office Depot. Geat deal but mine didnt have the 5 gigs free. They tried to charge me 180 and i was about to leave when i asked if i could pricematch with there own website and i think thats when they gave in.

119.99
-20 off 100 coupon (Local NYC Manhattan coupon)
+8.25 TAX

108.25 out the door
