Maxtor 250GB SATA 82.50 NO REBATES

Hey, I'm surprised no one has posted this, this is my first deal post so I hope my first doesn't end up just being a repost.... Here goes... Saw a 250 GB Maxtor SATA at Newegg for 82.50 (add 5 more for shipping). Pretty hot for SATA though the seek times on this thing aren't ideal, good for storage.

Pretty good deal for a Maxtor...

I just had two Maxtors die on me in the last week... both just about a year out of their warranty, 160GB and a 250GB, both were retailbox kits... it seems from the sticker one of them was even factory refurbed and sold as "new"

Theres 1day sale on a 5year warranty Seagate200GB at Compusa, in-store only... 30 bucks w/ tax is about 40, 3 mail-in rebates though

Maybe I'm just unlucky but I'm done with 1year warranty harddrives

Edit: Seagate/Compusa info

No its PATA

Not that 7200rpm can spin fast enough to even saturate PATA/100-133, let alone SATA/150

10k rpm SATA/150 is worth buying though

I must have the best luck with Maxtor: I still have a 30GB from 1999 I used for my por.....err important file back-up. The 250GB Diamond max10 (16MB cache) are pretty nice in RAID. No Raptors though, that's fir sure.

Hope I fon't go home to find them all heals up. 😀

I have an eight gig Maxtor still going fine, I think they were a completely different outfit in the 90s... That old Maxtor came on a Gateway PentiumPro system

These recent 1year warranty Maxtors can last just about a year and a week
To be fair I had 4 WD drives die on me in the past...... but those lasted a good deal longer than a year

I'll take the 5year warranty on these new denser platter drives that fail like nothing

I have around 5 of those 250GB Maxtor drives. 3 of them lost their partition info, and had to be reformatted. They've been fine since then. I have pretty good recovery software so I'm not afraid to buy these.

my 1 250 gig maxtor about a year old is dieing as well. one day it said it could not start because of missing/damaged startup files. after a reformat it has not been the same, takes about 1min or more to startup. the quick test from Device Manager results in a sustainted speed of 0 and a burst speed of 15.6 🙁

previsouly ive been a seagate fan, im gonna go back to them.

Starting to look like to me that all of these dirt-cheap Maxtors are just ticking timebombs with little long-term quality built in. I'm not happy to realize this as most of my HDDs I have are Maxtors (probably about 8/10 where the other 2 are WD). I hope I have better luck than all of you but I doubt it - I'm sure my time's coming too... 🙁
