I may jump and call as well, but does anyone know how loud these are?

WHAT???!! I CAN'T HEAR YOU! I'M DEFRAGGING MY NEW HARD DRIVE!!!

LOL. Yep, my Maxtor 250GB 8MB cache drive that I got from the CompUSA deal for $129 is the same way. FDB is quiet at idle, but seeks are noisy as heck. Sounds like the drive is going to fall apart. No way I could stand using this for the OS drive/pagefile. My two WD JB drives (ball-bearing though they are), are both still quieter at idle than my case/CPU fans, and seeks are nearly inaudible as well. They also run a tad bit cooler than the Maxtor, if the onboard thermal sensors can be believed.

i've heard reports that the Maxto 8mb cache drives are more reliable over long term and slighlty quieter than the Western Digital 8mb cache drives ?😕

i have one from compiusa and decided to go with thsi one also to set up a RAID1 mirror with partition setup

i have a seagate 200GB and this maxtor 250GB in same system, in a 400sc poweredge. very quiet for normal use unless i do CPU intensive work (like divx encoding)

noisier now in the summer 🙁

i agree it is quieter, but i was surprised to find out that my WD runs cooler

No -- WD 8mb drives are much quieter. The maxtor 250gb I have has seeks that are louder than my raptor 10,000rpm. Really annoying.

dew.

I dunno, I DON'T want to hear a hard drive at idle, but I LIKE knowing that it's working. I consider loud seeks the same as a throaty exhaust note from a car - it's an indication of power 🙂

Anyone rememember the "I Can't Believe It's Not Atlas IV" Quantum Fireball LM drives from about four years ago? THAT was a hard drive. Basically a SCSI drive with IDE electronics bolted on. Faster seek times than anything that's 7200 RPM now, and a cool turbine-like spin-down noise when you turn it off. Too bad they topped out at 30gb.

But they get louder over time comapred to the maxtor's sound which tend to be consistent due to it's FDB design. The WD8mb driver don't use FDB (fluid dynamic bearing).

ok people stop complaining the drive isnt that loud plus its ATA/133 which ill rather have than WD ATA/100 drives, i wonder if this drive comes with a controller i already have one but wouldnt mind since i have two pc's

Wonder no more:

Drives larger than 137GB require Windows 2000 SP3 or higher, XP SP1 or higher, or ATA/133 PCI card (not included)

I agree, the maxtor 8mb cache drives really aren't THAT loud as some have been mentioning. I can BARELY hear mine over the my video card fan and that is ONLY when it's defragment or doing a huge task.

Got the drive yesterday, very nice....

Much quieter than my WD 80gb when its not working hard, but the seeks are definately louder. I dont mind that though, as stated above, at least you know its working 😀

I ended up making a 20gb OS partition for XP Pro and used the last 220 for programs and such...

Thanks OP!

i don't want to stray too much off topic here...so if u respond pls do it in the PM, but 20GB seems a bit excessive today..or maybe just a good safety amount of free space? Perhaps I should try this?

I picked one up since this box needs more storage (2x160gb just doesn't hold me anymore). Ended up being $131 something with 2 day shipping. I can't argue about the price, nearly $.50 a gig and no rebates. 😀

A bit more info. To see the whole capacity (48 bit LBA) you need SP1 for XP. If you are installing on the drive and do not have XP with SP1 already in it, can't see the whole capacity in one partition - you will need an XP disc that already has SP1.

With Windows 2000, besides having SP3 already in there, there is a registry key that needs changing. I don't have 2000 so I don't have personal experience with it, but I got this info from Microsoft's support site:

48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000
You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters

Would this be good for an HTPC? Quietness of the system is important in a home theatre, eh? I've always seen people talking about the Seagate Barracudas as being among the quietest drives, but I've never had one. Got WD 8 MB 80 GB drives now and one 120 GB. Both my boxes are fairly loud presently, seems to me, in spite of installing quiet case fans and quiet CPU fan.

Edit: I decided to go for the Seagate Barracuda 120 GB instead. Pretty good deal. Cost me $66.60 after tax and shipping and $40 MIR. It's one/customer.

I have two of these, and they are definately louder than any of my WDs, Seagates, Samsungs, or Hitachis. But by loud I mean I can always hear them when I put my head next to the case, and whenever they are working hard they make an annoying clicking noise. Also, they only have a one year warrantee unlike the Seagate 120GB, although that has a rebate
