Well that's cool! Thanks for the tip!

I'm actually new to anadtech level bargain hunting. I stumbled across this site a few days before Black Friday and I was amazed at the stuff you folks were finding and the strategies that were being used. You folks are professionals! And I like it! :)

Bob

<< Folks, regarding the fax (or lack there of), there's a real nifty little solution that I'm surprised you have not discovered in your quest for bargains.

Visit www.j2.com, and sign up for JConnect Free. You get your own fax number and anything faxed there gets sent right to your email in TIF format.

Pretty darn slick, if ya ask me.

Well that's great. :( Now I have another thing to worry about. That seems ridiculous however. If they don't accept forms downloaded from their own website, what's the point in putting them there in the first place? Ugh.

Bob

<< best thing to do is go to B&M OD. They can print out invoice /receipt and can print out rebate form. I have had Walled Lake reject rebates that were submitted using rebate pddf file from OD website -- rejection said didn't submit original form!!!!!!! >>

This rebate is different.
On the form it clearly says send:
1. This rebate coupon or a copy.

You are correct! I just reviewed my copy of the form. Well that's a relief! :)

OUCH!!!!!

<< I got this drive two days ago, and I have to say I am really dissapointed. It is so damn load, it makes a revving up noise when it starts and continues with a slightly high pitched noise while its on, its about as loud as my CPU fan. This sucks considering my IMB Deskstar is so quiet and only makes noise when accessing things. Im getting my packaging ready and I think I will be returning it. >>

SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE.... Uggg

Hehe, already got an advanced replacement on the way from Maxtor. I got the 6L with the new fluid bearings as well.... Kinda sucks and hope this won't lead to a reliability problem if I get the same model back. Mine sounds EXACTLY like the sound Firestorm recorded, so his was not just a fluke.

So Maxtor is replacing your drive directly? Are they picking up the shipping costs to return your current drive and to send you an new one?

Mine is still sealed in plastic and now I'm wondering if we might be seeing a quality control problem.

Maxtor pays for shipping the drive to you, you're responsible for getting it back to them.

Adds about $5 to the cost of the drive, but it's better than returning it and missing out on the rebate. Should be fine once I get the replacement.

With regard to noise and Maxtor hard drives. I have had great luck with them in various PC's. BUT....I did have a Dish Network PVR that had a 40GB Maxtor inside and it was soooooooooooooooooooo loud. I ended up downggrading the unit to the basic (non-PVR) receiver. This was no easy task........If anyone hase over dealt with Dish Network's customer service, you know what I mean. The sound was exactly like the sound byte that was posted in this thread.

Good luck with this deal guys....I wish I read this in time to use the rebate form.

Does anyone else have any reports, good or bad, related to the noise that their particular Maxtor 20 gig drive makes?

I have had so many bad problems with various Maxtor drives,
I swore I would never again use another drive from them.
UDMA had to be disabled on many of them, even though it was supported.
Even a 1 year old drive I returned as defective was rejected.
They said that while the serial numbers were under warranty, they didn't match.
That was pure BULL, but what did I expect from such a POS company.

Swapped the wife's 20 gig WD with my Dishplayers Seagate 8 gig.
8 gig wasn't cutting it for wife, so I gave Maxtor another shot.
Put this 20 gig Maxtor in my rig, and my 20 gig WD in wife's PC.

So far the Maxtor has been great.
Much faster than the WD ATA 66 it replaced.
Not so much as a peep out of it either.
You can not tell it is running, it is that quiet.
And, I leave the case cover off my PC, so I would hear noice if present.
So far so good.

But as a general rule, AVOID Maxtor crap!
(Maybe the merger with Quantum will/has improved the quality?)

I'll tell you what - I have had the totally opposite luck with Maxtor.
I have used Maxtor drives almost exclusively in all the systems that I've put together.
I've had maybe one drive go bad in all that time. Virtually NO problems!!
While Western Digital, which used to be regarded as "one of the best",
have been the absolute worst drives I've ever used. I've had more WD drives
take a sh!t that I will never buy another one ever again. Never had any problems returning
them under warranty (probably because they were used to it & their return system was great!).

I tend to believe that you are an exception (with so many Maxtor problems).
Maybe in the past, I don't know. But, my experience is over maybe the last 5 years.
I've heard alot of people say that Maxtors have been good for them.
Just my 2 cents!

Office Depot has removed the rebate for the 20GB 7200RPM hard drive from their website. Can someone who downloaded this already please post it somewhere or be kind enough to email it to me.

Thanks in advance.

The bad news is that the rebate needed to be postmarked by yesterday (Saturday, December 15th). But if you still want to give it a shot, provide enable Private Messages on your account or provide an email address directly. I have a copy of the rebate form that I'd be happy to send you.

<< That rebate link is dead. Anyone got a URL or a copy I could get? >>

DJS was nice enough to send it to me.

I am posting on my server for now. My DSL is great, but my uplink is only 384K, but it should be plenty to handle you guys grabbing it.

Oops. Sorry. I got the filename wrong. I fixed it now.

Mine is perfectly fine. I can barely hear it. I don't have a noisy system either. Just two 80mm quiet sunon fans & an alpha heatsink with Sanyo Denki fan.

Thanks! [Camera pulls back as Bob tears the plastic wrap off his Maxtor box. "$29 and free shipping to boot!" he yells to nobody in particular.] :)

Got my rebate back today like the Customer Relations guy said. The back door is always better than the rebate company.
Ends up for me $32.14 total out of pocket. :D

About 5 co-workers in my office took part in this deal at my suggestion, and at least two (one blindly cut out the UPC without looking at the box) got retail 60 GB 7200 Maxtor drives substituted. Of course, I told them they should be prepared to complain to OD when their rebates get rejected and OD would probably make it good.

I'm happy with my 20 GB, benchmarked above 24,000 in Sandra and "feels" really fast.

What a problem to have! ;) I agree that OD will probably do the rebate anyway.

My 20GB netted $33 after MIR and would have been quite happy to argue with OD to get it on a 60GB!

I have been using the 20GB for about 2 weeks now and I agree that it "feels fast" although I haven't benchmarked it. My machine is almost at ear level less than 3 feet away and it has an older 10GB Maxtor as well as this 20GB job and all I can hear from the machine is a very quiet whir; both are VERY quiet.
