<< I have had so many bad problems with various Maxtor drives,
I swore I would never again use another drive from them.
UDMA had to be disabled on many of them, even though it was supported.
Even a 1 year old drive I returned as defective was rejected.
They said that while the serial numbers were under warranty, they didn't match.
That was pure BULL, but what did I expect from such a POS company.
Swapped the wife's 20 gig WD with my Dishplayers Seagate 8 gig.
8 gig wasn't cutting it for wife, so I gave Maxtor another shot.
Put this 20 gig Maxtor in my rig, and my 20 gig WD in wife's PC.
So far the Maxtor has been great.
Much faster than the WD ATA 66 it replaced.
Not so much as a peep out of it either.
You can not tell it is running, it is that quiet.
And, I leave the case cover off my PC, so I would hear noice if present.
So far so good.
But as a general rule, AVOID Maxtor crap!
(Maybe the merger with Quantum will/has improved the quality?) >>
I'll tell you what - I have had the totally opposite luck with Maxtor.
I have used Maxtor drives almost exclusively in all the systems that I've put together.
I've had maybe one drive go bad in all that time. Virtually NO problems!!
While Western Digital, which used to be regarded as "one of the best",
have been the absolute worst drives I've ever used. I've had more WD drives
take a sh!t that I will never buy another one ever again. Never had any problems returning
them under warranty (probably because they were used to it & their return system was great!).
I tend to believe that you are an exception (with so many Maxtor problems).
Maybe in the past, I don't know. But, my experience is over maybe the last 5 years.
I've heard alot of people say that Maxtors have been good for them.
Just my 2 cents!
