Muhahahah.. 😉 All depends on opinion. I'm ususally a WD man but I have this Maxtor drive and its fine. Its a bit loud at times no more so than my other ones.

just dont get ibm, my cheap dell came with a really cheap ibm drive, it crashed which is why i got this one.
wd, maxtor, same thing... seagate = a little quiter

The only difference I care about between WD and Maxtor 8MB drives is 3 yr warranty vs. 1 yr warranty. But if you buy the Maxtor with a credit card that has buyer's assurance program, the 1 yr warranty is doubled to 2 yrs anyways.

Performance wise, they're about the same overall. The Maxtor has better seek time than WD. But I have both and couldn't tell the difference in using them.

The Maxtor's seek noise is pretty loud, but quiet during idle. If you're willing to trade off a bit of seek performance for quietness, you can download a utility from Maxtor to put the drive into "quiet" mode.

Deal is not dead. In fact, it's even better now that Staples' rebate has expired, because you can PM the entire amount without having to account for Staples' own rebate.

So, the best PM right now is to CompUSA B&M. They have it for $99.99:

compusa link

PM that to Staples, then apply $15 off $75 or whatever coupon code you have, to arrive at a final price of $85 or so.

CompUSA also has the drive for $99 after rebate... but their branding it as the house brand, so no pricematching.

Depends on the CSR. CompUSA does list the Maxtor part number L01P160. Some CSRs will price-match just based on that. Another thing you can use is the PDF rebate form link at CompUSA, which is clearly a *Maxtor* rebate form, even though the CompUSA product description does not mention Maxtor.
