Maxtor 160GB $69.99 no rebates @outpost.com

The Hitachi deal for $50AR kills this one, just like the Hitachi drive rules this one in performance and quietness

This is a great deal w/o having to deal with rebates. The only better non-rebate deal was at Staples a couple weeks back when the same drive was $65 after a $15 coupon.

Has anyone received the drive yet? Does it have 2 - 80G platters or 3 - 60G ones?
Or what's the serial number on it?

I know I posted that thread as well, but personally I don't like waiting 6-8 weeks for a rebate that might not come. So I actually think this is a better deal.

But like I already said, this Maxtor is a poor performer and loud compared to the Hitachi (I know I have them both - well actually I have the 120GB Maxtor and a 160GB SATA Hitachi).

After the whole "Deathstar" fiasco, I don't think I'll be touching hitachi drives.

DM 9 Maxtor driver's poor perfomers? I don't think so. There are some of the fatest EIDE drives available.

Word. The 1 year warranty sucks though.

I'm really not sure that longer warranty = longer life.

If my drive fails what's important is that I lost data, not really the cost of the drive, which is minimal.

Just my opionion. If you're worried run a mirror set. I'd rather run a mirror set of Maxtor's than 1 seagate.

Reading this post made me reply that I concur that HITATCHIs are a lot better drives than MAXTORS. I have a 200G MAX. and a 80G HIT. and they are both in external enclosures, and they are both 7200RPM. The MAX is brand new yet makes a hell of a lot more clicking noises and runs extremely hot while my HIT is quiet, and runs cool even during mass writing periods. This with my own previous experience of a MAX crashing years ago and some other people around me (my co worker) telling me they've had their MAX crash makes me to believe they are not of such great quality. Going cheap on a HD purchase is not worth it, and you will suffer more when all that data is gone! I recommend HITACHI or WD.. I would never get a HD without a brand name.

Um, I'm running a 13GB Maxtor (around 5 years old) and a 40GB Maxtor (around 4 years old) that are on 24/7 and have no problems with them. I can't say the same for the Deathstars or any of the fvcking craptastic WD's I've had crap out on me (including one straight out of the box, brand new). They're hardly a "subpar" brand like you seem to imply.

Hi Superstud:

Hmmm.. ever hear that car manufacturer can more easilty make reliable 4 cylinder cars than 8 cylinders? I was talking in particular more modern sizes.

Name calling doesn't do much to provide information. IF a drive fails even before working, I would say there's other factors that can come in play: shipping, installation, and ofcourse just being a lemon. A drive that goes bad after a year is 'for sure' a crappy drive.

If you can feel the heat coming off my maxtor and listen to its click you will question this too, and this is brand new (but working). But in all fairness it may live up to prove me wrong. I may be biased from my own Maxtor going bad!

Ultimately everyone is feel to make up their own minds depending on their own experiences.

Can't say for sure without specific exact model numbers, but the 200G drive probably has more platters on it, which certainly causes more noise and heat.

I've never had a drive die, so I can't actually say from experience which drives are more reliable, but even if I had, it would simply be anecdotal (like your evidence) and not in any way indicative of the drives overall.

All of the major brands have good batches and bad batches. I have been running two of these maxtors for over a year now and they haven't had any problems and get good performance(to the point that a RAID 0 stripe of two of them is bus limited more than disk throughput limited). The larger 200GB model may very well be using more platters, as my drives stay under 40C under heavy use in a very cramped case(small cheapo mid tower with dual athlons and 4 hard drives total).

Deathstar is the past for IBM. After IBM sold their division to Hitachi, it is totally changed. Hitachi engineering has lived up to its original reputation again. IBM high executives cover up on their faulty hard drive was scandalous. Based on their internal engineering report, their engineers knew very well that their hard drive would fail because of its risky design. Hitachi has changed their design once for all to fix it up.

I have a 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 for almost a year now, and also two Hitachi SATA 160GB drives for about six months, and none of them failed or caused any problems. But the simple fact is that the Hitachi's are much quieter, in fact the single Maxtor makes more noise (mostly clicking sounds) than both the Hitachis together. And perfromance is not the same, with the Hitachis outperforming the Maxtor on access time (I can't compare sequential read/write times since the Hitachis are in raid-0 configuration which increases the throughput). But according to reviews I read (storagereview.com), the Hitachis have better performance than even the seagate Barracudas, which I can attest to being way faster than the Maxtor (I also own a 120GB Seagate).
BTW, I was very impressed with my Seagate hardrive performance, and maybe I would one day try to comapre it one-on-one against the Hitachi.

So bottom line (read the reviews), the Maxtor is noisy and have lower performance than Hitachi and Seagate. Hitachis are the quietest hard drives by far.

i had a maxtor hd...loud & it crashed on me. but that was 3 years ago...maxtor blows in my opnion.Western digi/seagate/hitachi is the way to go.

Odd... Shows "Price: $ 119.99" when I click the link.

These newer 'FBD' maxtor drives are louder than the older 'liquid bearing' maxtor drives, especially at spin-up. I guess it's cheaper to make them this way.

Well I was just making the point that hardware reliability seems to depend on luck more than anything. My previous company outlawed any IBM/Hitachi's from being purchased again after our media guy's deathstar started clicking. It died very shortly after I finished backing it up. And my first ever WD died on me within less than a year. My replacement WD was bad out of the box and died a day later. The WD they put in as the third replacement makes awful noises.

I know people (like yourself) who think Maxtors suck, and I've had people who think exactly the same way I do. 🙂
