got one because i needed some bulk storage. but i was hopeing you could upgrade the warranty on these from one year to three years but no such luck. you can on the WD drives on there webpage, it's only like $10 for an extra two years. thinking i might return it and hold out for the same drive in a WD and get the extended warranty.

I dropped by the Sacramento Best Buy at Arden this afternoon to check it out.

Approximately 30 retail boxes stacked, all of them the newer packaging with 1 year warranty.
Judging from the wording on the boxes, they're all just standard 120GB drives.
All of them (at least the twelve or so I checked) were 2MB cache.

If I'm reading it right, some are 60GB platters, and some are 80GB platters. Someone once told me to look at the serial number for the number of heads, and if he was right, it's about 50/50 4 heads (60GB) vs 3 heads (80GB).

A quick jaunt over to Compusa to see if the selection is better.
Four boxes on the shelves that I could find.
Same packaging, same model, everything the same except for the serials.
All had 4 heads, and all are 8MB cache.

Could you point out that info on the heads/platters and BTW what is better?

When you said that CompUSA had the same thing where you saying the same boxes as Best Buy, but 8mb cache or that all the boxes inside CompUSA where the same as each other, but different then BB?

Supposedly, it's the second digit of the serial number. I'm not sure if it still holds true (Haven't done enough testing, limted budget) but it does seem to correlate at this point.

The UPC's of the boxes will have a label on the side. It's LY06 or something like that. If it starts with a 'P', you get 8MB cache drives. 'L' is the standard 2MB.

I know about the P code my question was are the boxes the exact same as Best Buy?
Are they the same new red boxes that say 20GB free or are they the older standard orange boxes?

What are the codes for the platters? What is suppose to be better?

Picked the last one up at my local bb 5 minutes after they opened. Seems to be alright, no problems yet w2k install detected the entire 120 gigs without any probs and it was a totally uneventful install and migration to a larger hard drive.

I got one last night, after waiting for 30 minutes when I asked the guy for the 120gig in the ad, he brought me 2 different drives before giving me the right one. The box is weird. It even says 100GB drive w/sticker for extra 20GB drive. Whatever, it's 120GB drive, or I should say when installing, it's actually just over 111GB. Will serve as my video drive for my new Leadtek Winfast 2000 Deluxe tv card. Recorded Andromeda and the Shield this weekend nicely. Will hook up my nf2 onboard sound to my new Sherwood receiver and use the video-out on my 9700Pro to hook it up to the TV and I'm all set.

Sucks to be living in NYC .. you can never find a store that has it b/c someone has either taken them all, or never had it to begin with! :(

I can confirm that my CompUSA has the exact same drive and all that I saw at the Nashua, NH store were the 8mb cache code.
However if you are thinking of doing a buy and switch forget it as CompUSA records serial numbers on all the drives
sold and it's even printed on your reciept.
The only possible hope is to try and do a price match, but of course that is YMMV because this is a rebate and CompUSA
doesn't have to honor other people's rebates in price matches.

Ever see a shampoo bottle with a "20% more for free" sticker? Maxtor is stealing their ideas...for HDD (so sad, so very sad...)

I picked up one of the 120 GIG maxtors about a month back for $99.99 at BB. It is slightly louder than my stock dell harddrive but is not bad. I would suggest it as a good backup!

Hehe, maybe Maxtor ran outta 120GB boxes and used some leftover 100GB boxes and stuck the stickers on for good measure.

thats exactly what they did. They didn't even bother replacing the Part Number stickers that still say L01J100 << 100 meaning 100gb. :)

I thought it was two seperate drives you were getting though? A 100 GB and a 20 GB.

Maxtor has never made a 100GB IDE drive.
They jumped from 80 directly to 120, so any thought that the model number means 100GB is
wrong or just a new marketing tactic.

Now I am trying to decide whether I keep this 2mb version and RAID it with my exhisting 120 or try and find
an 8mb version and keep them seperate.

Look for the 4 digit code on the white label. It will be sideways to everything else.
If there is a "P" in it so far they have all been 8MB cache drives.
It is very hit and miss. So far at Best Buy through about 40 drives I have not found one yet.

i looked through about 50 or so myself that were in our warehouse, and all of them have the L code, none have the P code. The actual 8mb boxes do however have the P code. oh well...maybe the first shipment of them were the only P shipment, in which case all of them are long gone :(

Score.
2MB is fine with me, i just need it for archiving, not going to put a lot of strain on it. Got the last one at the Santa Rosa, CA BB.

Picked one up today at the Carolina Place Best Buy in Charlotte. They had several left.
