$20 bucks isn't bad if you don't mind having to replace the drive in a year. Check out the warranty period on the OD site ad - 1 yr. Maxtor sells drives that have longer warranties, but you'll pay a lot more for them. The extra cost basically pays for the replacement ahead of time. Maxtor is well known for engineering a self-destruct around the 13th month from initial installation. All I can say is backup, backup, backup.

Quick question. I currently have a 120GB WD HDD, if I buy a 120GB Maxtor HDD, can I run them in a raid configuration or do they have to be identical models? Thanks

More rubbish. Where the facts dude? Maxtor's are engineered to self-destruct in 13th month??? Show me some proof, besides your opinion. I've built somewhere from 75-100 computers since 1996 ALL using Maxtor drives and I have not had even one fail. I continue to buy Maxtors to this day along with the occasional Seagate.

One of my 13.6GB Maxtor ATA drive is still working fine, and I am telling you that it's more than 13 months old.

P.S. My dad is still using it in one of his office computers.

I guess I got the one lucky 7 gig drive that Maxtor made 5+ years ago with it's 1 year warranty, because it's still going strong. Although I have had a IBM and a WD that failed, but they missed the self-destruct mark as they failed while under the 3 and 1 year warranty respectively.

I bought a 250Gb IDE 8Mb drive for $99 @ Comp USA Pre-Thanksgiving 6hr sale last yr. It started acting up with bad sectors, missing and corrupted files around end of Dec. I ran diagnostics and got some sort of error code.

It took them 6 weeks to replace the drive. Several times they told me it was on its way. Turned out they were waiting on some refurbs to arrive. When I finally bitched enough, they sent me a new one. The replaced drv, along with 250Gb sata, 200 Gb ide, 160Gb ide are all working fine since.

Unless more drives fail, I'll consider it an isolated incident, and will keep buying Maxtor drives when they go on sale.

I checked OD online and put one in the cart. If it shows 0 after I entered my zip code (with a message THIS ITEM IS NOT AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCATION), I don't even need to check local stores for availability, right? Damn, I'm late.

I picked one up after work today in a Minneapolis suburb, they had 4 in store even though online it "was not available in my area"

Did you get the 15 off to work? I was sent a 15 off 75 in the mail 2-3 days ago. Didn't specifically say I couldn't use it on a hard drive like some of the others OD has sent me.
I grabbed a 100+20GB bonus drive and the cashier wouldn't take it or the register wouldn't accept it. She called the assistant mgr and he looked at the coupon and said the HD was a peripheral and wouldn't give me the 15 off. I walked out.:disgust: It's pretty sad when they would rather lose a sale than accept the coupon and in the process maybe bring back a few of the customers like me that used to shop there. OD USED to be a good place to buy computer stuff but now those coupons they send aren't worth
diddly squat. I get OM coupons all the time and I use them without any restrictions.

Facts? If you think I could actually get their hands on hardcopy documentation that Maxtor manufacture's HD to fail after their warranties expired? Maxtor would have a major class action suit filed against them.
No, I do not have anything of the sort to offer you as proof. Only my personal experience in building computers. I do not build PC's for a living, but I have built about a dozen for family and friends. Everyone that I have built that had a Maxtor installed failed within 2 months of the expiration date - never within the warranty. I have never had a problem with Seagate and I had one WD fail under warranty about 8 years ago.
Repeat, every Maxtor I have had, has failed just outside it's warranty period. The last one that failed on me was a 200Gg dead-on the 13th month. I called Maxtor tech support to complain about it and mentioned my three previous experiences. The rep basically took the attitude, Ha Ha, you're screwed, there's plenty more fish in the sea. When I suggested to him that building your drives to fail after a certain time period, he simply said he could not confirm or deny that Maxtor does this. HE WOULD NOT DENY THAT MAXTOR DOES THIS? WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT? I'm sorry, but that was enough for me to never buy another Maxtor and no one else will ever convince me otherwise.
If you've had good luck with them, then fine. I am merely expressing my opinion and why I feel this way. If I can convince just one person to stop and think about the real posibility of Maxtor practising this and buy the Seagate instead, then that's great!

Melectricus, thanks for the tip. Indeed there were 2 left when I visited my local OD.

I'm trying to install the drive. There is small one pin jumper (looks like). Is it removable or it's part of the jumper? I checked p7 of the installation guide, Style A2 has the jumper location like that. So, maybe this drive is DiamondMax Plus 9. The reason I ask is because I can't mount it. I use it in an external USB case and the system can't recognize it. I set the jumper at master and wonder if I should have taken the 1-pin jumper out for it to work.

Any ideas?

Got mine on the web and even got free shipping so I don't have to use my time and gas to do in store pickup.

Sorry I jumped the gun. Partion Magic can see it. Also the USB to IDE adapter I purchased from xcpgear.com is the problem. With it connected, PC would freeze when booting up. If turned on after booting, Windows warned that driver is not properly installed.

Stopped at my OD on way home from work today. Saw some 100's and one had a bonus 20gig sticker on it, but not all of them did. Had an employee open the case and give me the bonus drive. At the cash register asked it they honor OfficeMax coupons, they said yes, so I pulled out one of the 10 off 20 cards OM sends me. Also pulled out my OD Advantage card. And yes, the rebate forms printed also

Bottom line, 120 gb out the door for 96.99 (*&^%* 7% sales tax) with 2 40.00 MIRS = 16.99 after rebates, with Advantage points also for this quarter, which effectively rebates 20% in the form of an OD gift card, so real world after all BS price is I make $1.01 on the deal (99.99 plus 7.00 tax = 106.99- 10.00 OM coupon = 96.00 out the door - 80.00 MIR - 18.00 in Advantage gift cert = +1.01 to the redhead)

God, I love this country!!

All I gotta do now is figure out what to do with the drive.

Edit-brain dead when i did this post-the advantage portion works out to 10%, or a 9.00 #, still a great deal though

I do have one complaint about this drive. It is LOUD. It emits this little whine that is really aggravating, something I suppose I'll have to get used to. I checked to see if it was vibration noise, too, but it wasn't. I kind of wish it was, because then I'd have to options to fix it.

All in all, good stuff.

I don't own a Maxtor drive, however I have read complaints from other people about the noise. But I also have read there is a program called AMSET from Maxtor that supposedly works great for making the drive quiet.

Here is one thread about it and the AMSET fixing his noise problem.

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=362652

Apparentlly the file is hidden on the Maxtor site also. Here is some more info about it with a download link.
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=125218

I'm not sure if this would help for a whine noise though.

AMSET only reduces seek noise (and I never noticed much difference). It won't do anything for spindle whine.

I have plenty of maxtor drives scattered about my machines and never once has one of them crapped out. Same with my WDs. And they didn't even have those nice 1-year warranties. They were all OEM. In fact, the only dead hard drive I have is this one. (You'll notice there's a fairly good reason it's dead.)

Was it shot before or after it died?

Hmm, nothing to be proud of in the first pix, way random.
