Maxthon browser, How to disable auto-update?

I do not see an option in the setting. I would like to keep an older version. Is there a config option?

I use the portable version, comes in 7zip file, right from their official forum so you might want to try that out.

I have the last version of MyIE2 (Before name change to Maxthon) and I have an option to disable update checking......

Maxthon doesnt have that??

Yeah...... Everything good that was MyIE2 is gone just about... When GOOGLE got involved it went to crap....... (And they wonder why I dont post on thier new maxthon site now.... ITS A PIECE OF TRASH...... I am grateful to still have MyIE2)



I hope you can figure out a way to block it buddy!! (I UNDERSTAND WANTING TO STAY ON AN OLDER VERSION)

Do you know what address is used for update checking?? IF YOU DO,YOU CAN BLOCK IT IN YOUR HOST FILE!!!

Go to Filehippo. They have like 10-15 recent versions of almost all popular softwares.

LOPRI have you blocked the updates buddy??

I believe the address used is update.maxthon.com (IM NOT SURE) so if it is simply adding:

"127.0.0.1 update.maxthon.com" to your host file would produce excellent results!

If you DO NOT HAVE "localhost" pointed in the host file to 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1 localhost) use 0 instead (0 update.maxthon.com)


I hope you have gotton this problem resolved

Tested, not working either way. Still asking for update with UAC prompt every once in a while. They want all our data in the chinese cloud i see.

Looking for alternatives, but taking privacy as a concern make it impossible. Google Chrome is an option as u probably give them the most sensitive data anyway, but those chrome extension from 3rd parties scamming people break the deal. Internet explorer would be my first option if it werent because we lose all the usability features from maxthon. Also looking at vivaldi but still in the process, and uses chromium anyway so why bother.

Any idea or suggestion.

Buddy I got the same problem, what I did?

Reinstall the old version BUT DO NOT OPEN IT

add the following lines to your host file:

127.0.0.1 223.202.36.52
127.0.0.1 8.18.216.151
127.0.0.1 update.maxthon.com
127.0.0.1 updates.maxthon.com
127.0.0.1 maxthon.com
127.0.0.1 dl.maxthon.com

next, right click on the browser then locate destiny, you'll see the core files

the path should be something like that:

\Maxthon3\Bin\Maxthon.exe

select all .DLL and .EXE files and mark them as "READ ONLY"

then rename MxUp.exe to __MxUp.exe or another name that you will not forget just in case.

I was a bit paranoid so I blocked any way of upgrading it and future ways of upgrading it aswell, you can undo it ofcourse, just remove the lines, unmark the "READ ONLY" and rename __MxUp.exe to the original name.

I'm not sure that staying on an older, potentially flawed/unsecure browser is the best idea in the long run.

The best replacement for the Maxthon functionality (that I liked) is slimjet, which is a tweaked version of chrome.

Problem is, the browser was good as it was, no need to update and since it's not a mainstream browser I don't think it is a potential target, I mean, people wouldn't bother to try and find a flaw to an especific build of an outdated and not widely spread browser.
Anyway I liked it very much the way it was, thank you. So I want to keep using it until it does not support some feature or another, I don't want to be forced to send my data to a chinese cloud either.

Fair enough, but you're still using a browser based on known web layout engine (Trident or Webkit), so security should be considered. Any exploits for these older engines will make the browser vulnerable.

It amazes me that on top of all the programming technology of any current browser, developers fail to know and fail to add those very simple, already known, usability features that make browser faster and easier. It is like building a concept car, then putting a single door in the ceiling submarine style.

Maxthon old versions and Opera 12 are often referred as the best ones, and customizable mouse gestures (not only the gesture but linking ANY available browser action or shortcut to a custom mouse gesture) the best feature.

Opera makes it even creepy as they themselves did destroyed them themselves for reasons i dont know.

For me it looks that renaming the mxup.exe to any name worked. I also had the redirecctions in the host file so i dont know if they were really necessary. But with both done it is working not even necessary to protect the file for the moment.

And YES older SW is better than the garbage out now..... PEOPLE HAVE LOST ALL SENSE OF GOOD...... All they make is bloated ugly crap that doesnt run well,etc......

In case you havent gotton what you wanted yet Lopri,I just saw a thread on the Maxthon site someone posted asking about this.......

A staff member said to remove MXUP.EXE and it wont check for updates anymore..........

Just start task scheduler and remove the Maxthon update task...
