Guys,
I have Asus Maximus and 4x1gb Ballistix 800mhz ram. My pc never crashes but yesterday it did. So I ram memtest and found out one of my modules is faulty, it did not pass the test. This is the third kit that failed on me in 6 months. I RMAed two kits two months ago for the same reason, they failed month from each other. I test all new kits with memtest as soon as I get them so I know they were fine before I started using them.
I never ran it out of spec. Kit number 3 (one that failed yesterday) and kit 4 (still in PC runnig fine, I tested it this morning) were running 4-4-4-12 @ 800mhz @ 1.86v (1.86v is to make sure that mobo doesn't overvolt, it passed memtest like that so it was stable). Kit 1 and 2 (that failed two months ago) were ran at 5-5-5-15 @ 800mhz @ 2.2v. Only thing I can think of is that maybe ASUS was right when they said I should only run double sided ram, not single sided. But the kit number 1 was double sided and it failed too.
I called Crucial support and they gave me RMA number. I tried to get a refund instead of a replacement but guys said he can't do that. He said that Crucial have a new revision of modules (2.0v ones) and apparently they are better than the old ones. I will be sending my dead ram back soon.
The question is: What shall I do once I get a replacement? Shall I give Crucial another ago or do I get different brand of ram? It won't be a problem to sell new replacement modules as they will be in sealed box, my Ebay rating is very good too. I guess I could get £20 net for that kit. I can keep my other Crucial kit that is still working as a back up, or I can sell it too.
If go with Crucial, I still don't know how to prevent my mobo slaughtering my ram again. I really don't know why my ram keeps dying and something tell me it will happen in the future.
Let me know what you think guys, I am really lost here.
Oh, and hi, this is my first post here.
