Maximus is killing my Ballistix ram

Guys,

I have Asus Maximus and 4x1gb Ballistix 800mhz ram. My pc never crashes but yesterday it did. So I ram memtest and found out one of my modules is faulty, it did not pass the test. This is the third kit that failed on me in 6 months. I RMAed two kits two months ago for the same reason, they failed month from each other. I test all new kits with memtest as soon as I get them so I know they were fine before I started using them.

I never ran it out of spec. Kit number 3 (one that failed yesterday) and kit 4 (still in PC runnig fine, I tested it this morning) were running 4-4-4-12 @ 800mhz @ 1.86v (1.86v is to make sure that mobo doesn't overvolt, it passed memtest like that so it was stable). Kit 1 and 2 (that failed two months ago) were ran at 5-5-5-15 @ 800mhz @ 2.2v. Only thing I can think of is that maybe ASUS was right when they said I should only run double sided ram, not single sided. But the kit number 1 was double sided and it failed too.

I called Crucial support and they gave me RMA number. I tried to get a refund instead of a replacement but guys said he can't do that. He said that Crucial have a new revision of modules (2.0v ones) and apparently they are better than the old ones. I will be sending my dead ram back soon.

The question is: What shall I do once I get a replacement? Shall I give Crucial another ago or do I get different brand of ram? It won't be a problem to sell new replacement modules as they will be in sealed box, my Ebay rating is very good too. I guess I could get £20 net for that kit. I can keep my other Crucial kit that is still working as a back up, or I can sell it too.

If go with Crucial, I still don't know how to prevent my mobo slaughtering my ram again. I really don't know why my ram keeps dying and something tell me it will happen in the future.
Let me know what you think guys, I am really lost here.

Oh, and hi, this is my first post here.

I have a pair of Crucial's Ballistix sticks as well, and I'm jumping through all sorts of hoops to get my comp back to its 2gigs of glory.

Recently one of my sticks died so I RMA'd it and kept the good one. Surprise surprise, the new stick had countless errors after half an hour of running memtest.

Now I don't know what to do. Send both sticks back hoping for something to work?
Send in another dead stick?
Honestly, I'm just trying to find some descent sticks so I can get some gametime in before summer ends. 🙁

I am suprised that you haven't RMAed both sticks, they are kit after all. Are your voltages and timings set manually? I know Maximus overvolts by 0.15v bios vs real so you should consider that too. Are you running Asus Maximus?

Well, if your ram is failing memtest send it back, both sticks. As I said, three pairs failed on me already, I am considering whether to stick with Crucial or get something else. I have some time to decide what to do before my replacement ram get here, until than I will have 2gb running. I am hoping that somebody on this forums can tell me why my ram keeps dying on me...

I think its already been mentioned, Crucial has a high failure rate. I've heard this on several different areas of the forums. In the meantime, I'll get the RMA forms ready.. here we go again.

I've also had horrible luck with ballistix. After doing some searching it seems like it isn't just us. I sent back my first set a couple of months ago even though only one module was faulty. 2 weeks ago a stick from the new set went bad and I sent only that one back thinking that maybe I had at least one reliable stick already. Just got the new one in yesterday. If this one goes bad I've had it with crucial. Playing draw poker with memory doesn't sit well with me really.

To answer your question, I doubt it's your MB. Crucial seems to be having trouble with the quality of memory it's putting out these days. After the problems you've had I'd say try another brand (with a good warranty) before you trash the mb.

When the new DIMMs arrive, sell them in the FS/Trade forum...
Buy some good G.Skill, Mushkin or Corsair.:laugh:

Ok people, I have some news.

I found some people on Xtremesystems forums that were told by Crucial reps that Ballistix ram is not compatible with X38 chipset :Q .
They were given full refund for their ram. Only Ballistix compatible with X38 is their 5300 model.

I have written an email to Crucial asking for my money back instead of getting a replacement, I used the incompatibility argument and cases of other people being refunded. Fingers crossed...

Another thing I found is that unused kits of 6400 Ballistix go for approx £25 and more on ebay, that includes postage.

I also went to Maplin and got myself Digital Multimeter to make sure that my voltages are ok. I measured vdimm voltage and found out that 1.86v setting in bios is real 1.961v idle and 1.968v load. Therefore Maximus overvolts ram by 0.11v which isn't really a problem.

So what does it mean for me?
I will be selling the replacement kit I will get from Crucial (if I don't get my money back, which I don't think I will) on Ebay.
I will get 2x2GB Mushkin Redline PC2-8000 that I was recommended instead on XS forum. I was told Muskin uses chips made by Powerchips so they have nothing in common with Micron's D9 (the ones I have now). I am very tempted to get two Mushkin kits to have 8gb of ram so I can disable page file in Vista. This is not necessary right now but will be essential once I get SSD drive (hopefully Santa will get me one for Xmas 😉 ) due to the fact that paging might decrease SSD's lifetime.

P.S
How on earth do people live with 2gb of ram in Vista? :Q
I have Firefox, Thunderbird, Bittorent, Skype and Trilian open and the bloody thing is complaining about not having enough ram. It keeps telling me to close programs. Unbelievable!
People, life is to short to have only 2gb ram with Vista, get more!!

Thats some good information kolifx, thanks!
Sadly I went with the x32 version of Vista, and I don't have the x38 chipset. So I don't know whats up.
