[MaximumPC] Keep calm and carry on - Intel says sockets remain in "forseeable future"

What is "forseeable future"? If it means next 2-3 years then it's correct. But note he also said:
“However, Intel cannot comment on specific long-term product roadmap plans at this time, but will disclose more details later per our normal communication process.”
This is what the rumor mill was talking about. Broadwell looks to be BGA only product or at least that is what intel said to its partners recently.

I'd say if "forseeable future" doesn't cover current roadmaps then they are misusing "forseeable".

Thats good, i dont think ive ever upgraded a CPU and kept the same mobo but i still like the flexibility anyways.

Foreseeable means they have no plans to stop using sockets, but they can't say "we will never stop using sockets" because that is the sort of thing that some lawyer troll will come back and sue them over 25yrs from now if they happen to stop using sockets for their MoS2-based quantum processors in the year 2037.

The good news is we have both AMD and Intel confirming their intentions to continue supporting the socket-based market segment and enthusiasts. What is not to like here? This glass ain't half-full, this glass is completely 100% full.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a tech company to make commitments beyond a roughly 2 year outlook. Based on Intel directly addressing the rumors I expect there to be rough equivalents to the current K line up to at least 2015ish.

It's funny to observe...silly season is starting in the GPU section...and now this in the CPU section...people should shovel some more snow, than spread rumors...

The GPU section is just outright terrible. Seems alot of people got zero source critisism. Well, time to finally get the moon accepted as a big giant cheese!

There is a lot of mini-Teo's, Char-lie's and domiHaber's in the GPU section...thinking that posting any link...false or tru... is a scoop for their E-peen granted..I just hope it dosn't spill over here too...

I'm filing this in the same drawer as AMD's "Steamroller for AM3+ is on track" denial- I'll believe it when I see some silicon. ;)

There was never a roadmap that showed SR core in FX moniker on desktop, only APU and sFM2.

Intel will do what makes most economical sense to them. If that means BGA only CPUs then they will do it. But that's not going to happen in next couple of years anyway so it's not relevant at the moment. There will be plenty of IB and Haswell unlocked models until 2015.

Glad to hear there's still some reason prevailing in Santa Clara.

So all the people already complaing about BGA now looks like.....

.... people who have sent Intel a message that they have heard loud and clear.

For all you know, this "rumor" could have been a trial balloon floated by Intel themselves. Either way, they know what people think of the idea. And that's good.

Bollocks, they have wasted Intel rescources for nothing but a lame dubious rumour.

But this dosn't mean intel won't make a SoC...were you cannot replace hardware at all...in the "forseable" future.
Just wait untill they get further into the mobile-buisness.

I really don't care to be hoenst...tinfoil-hats are boring...almost as boring as rumour-mongers.

Cmon guys, the CPU and GPU forums would be pretty boring between releases without rumors :\

Can you imagine thread after thread of "what cpu should i pick?" and nothing else

Meh each to their own, i say bring on the FUD :D

You know...there are sites for that kind of idiocy.
No need to infect AT with that crap.
Places were I am sure you would be just fine...along side likeminded *censored due to AT's problem with calling a spade for a spade*

So why not go there...and let the rest of us not having to deal with "Silly seaon" and all the FUD and lies that do nothing...but murky the waters?

Most people don't go to the CPU or GPU forum to look at FUD links and rumors...we come looking for knowlegde and facts...you sound like a type that seeks the opposite of that...

Is there something in the water in Denmark this afternoon? Both of your responses are incredibly childish.

I don't read rumor sites and I never said one way or the other if I thought this actually was going to happen.

I'm also not saying that it definitely was a trial balloon. It could be, but it doesn't matter -- the point is that Intel has gotten a message that a lot of people will be royally pissed off if they get rid of socketed CPUs. And that's worth the "waste of resources" (lol) of an Intel PR guy making a statement to a magazine.

Not to be chicken little, but Intel statement is as vague as it can be. One, foreseeable future is open to interpretation, and two, it still leaves possibility that only the E lineup will remain socket based while main stream stuff will be BGA.

So basically we still do not know anything.
