Maximum PC is kind of presumptious...

Boy they are really hounging me to pay my subscription... I never had a subscription, though, I ordered my free magazine, and they sent it, and now they are threatening my credit rating if I don't send payment... Damn, they never even got my credit card number...

I'm not knocking the mag, its one of the best of its kind I've seen... And I've been meaning to send in my subscription, but now that they are getting so pushy, They may have just lost a customer...

Why are you blasting Maximum PC when EVERY SINGLE computer magazine acts just like that? By accepting the free issue, it almost means you agree to pay the subscription, its your fault falling into the trap. Or just call them and tell them your mag sux and I dont want to subscribe, how hard can that be?

If I remember right, the fine print says that unless you cancel the subscription, it will be shipped and billed to you efter you recieve your trial issue.

Why would you want to read that rag in the first place?

Any good online computer hardware sites, including this one, will fabulously outclass MaximumPC in every meaningful category: content, objectivity, age of information, technical prowess, price.

On top of that, the MaximumPC editorial staff hasn't changed much since their old Boot days, meaning we're still stuck with the same jaded, ignorant old techs who worship Intel and for some strange reason believe that it is actually worthwile to even consider purchasing a name brand PC from Compaq or Dell. They should be shot for this.

I'm sorry, that magazine justs gets me extremely hostile.

I had a heck of a time with MaximumPC a year or so ago. I subscribed and sent my CC# with the mail-in card, they charged my card and then all was well for about 10 months. Then they sent a collection agency after me for the amount. I couldn't find a check stub for the amount (and never checked my credit records), so I mailed a check to the collection agency. Then 4 months later, they started sending me harrassing letters again. Then I went and checked and found out that I'd paid them twice, phoned them up and went through a big hassle trying to get it straightened out. At one point I got some operator who told me that how stupid I was to send a payment to the collection agency for a bill that I'd already paid (ok, I agree that this was true, but still the whole thing was their fault from the beginning so calling me an idiot was out of line). In the end, they wouldn't refund my money, never apologized for the hassle they put me through and just gave me a two year subscription - which expires soon.

I like the magazine, but they aren't as technical as they used to... the general tone of the magazine is both more childish and less technical lately than it used to be back in the early years of Boot.

Modus:

Are you talking about Maximum PC or magazines in general? Because print materials has its advantages over online web sites.

Modus: they should be shot for suggesting that it might be worthwhile to buy a prebuilt machine from one of the top OEMs? If they like the machine and they think it's a good deal, then why should they be shot, or even flamed. There are plenty of reasons to buy a prebuilt machine from a major OEM versus building it yourself or having the Mom&Pop store down the street build it - so many that I don't think that I have to list them. If you know what you are doing and you have the time (two big "ifs&quot😉 then I agree building your own is better, but if you are joe-average consumer then a well-built machine from Dell or Compaq may be something to consider.

I stopped buying MaximumPC a while ago. Why read news that's months behind? Why read reviews that lack depth? I suppose that there was a time when they were relevant, but now they just suck.

I've been getting pcmagazine for free for about 2 years. When the renewal request came in the mail I told them to cancel it. Well I've been still getting it in the mail and I havn't paid for it ever since I told them to cancel hehe. I never even read the things anyways.

pm,

<<There are plenty of reasons to buy a prebuilt machine from a major OEM versus building it yourself or having the Mom&Pop store down the street build it>>

Actually, there are none.

Major name brand machines are not faster, cheaper, more reliable, or better supported than a clone PC built by a reputable local computer dealer. There are thousands of local "Mom and Pop" computer shops that have a good track record with excellent customer references, and who could easily beat any price from a large OEM while offering the same warranty.

And when a smaller company offers the same or better than a larger company, it's your duty as a consumer to do business with them, so that you act in some small way to shape the industry and encourage fierce competition (many small companies) as opposed to stagnant monopolism (few large companies).

Modus: Though I can understand your contempt of the OEM builders since you are a VAR/builder, I think you are being shortsighted by suggesting that they are useless. Many people need 24/7 techsupport and OEM machines offer a good value. I know you can probably beat a spec Dell machine in components and price, but can you offer 24/7 techsupport? Additionally OEMs offer lease options, etc.

I am sure you have a great business going there, but I think there is a place for OEM machines for many people.
