Hey guys,

I want to overclock my pc, jus wondering how hot i can run my Slot1 P3 500?
It currently runs at about 46c under full load and takes about 12hrs 2 complete 1 S@H WU, trying to reduce that time as much as i can :D

Hi,

Most processors can go up to about 90c, however I have a personal limit of about 55-60, I personally won't let my processors go past that.

Hopefully you can increase the FSB a little, and bring your times down a little without too much extra heat.

About 3 years ago I had my P3 550E@825 running under 50º at 100% work load.

Can you check if it is a 500E or a 500 ?
Don't forget that if you got a P3 500E, that is quite a good overclocker.
Could you improve ventilation on the case ?
That P3 should hit 665 without much trouble if it is...

If it is a Katmai, one of the old ones, maybe you could try 560... Don't even bother to try more if you don't have good cooling.

P3 500 average 612 on overclocker.com and the 500E averages 744 :)

Let me know more info and i'll help ya out more... but with those temps, it looks like its a no go :(

Ok,

SETI Spy reports that it's a P3 Katmai, im not sure if that means it's just a 500 not 500E?
I'm going 2 put another case fan into the system but the cpu only has the original intel cooler.
It's been running @ 560 for the last 12hrs at full load and now the max temp is about 48c, should i push it harder and try 2 run it @ 600 or more?

Download one cpu id software from the net. theire small and very good.

If your board supports 1 Mhz jumps, then yes, go 1 mhz at a time and let SETI run for several hours on each settings before going to the next one.
But if it's and old one, it shouln't go much after 112 FSB...

I think the next step from FSB112 is 133, i'll just leave it at 560, seems 2 run stable and has taken 30min off my WU time so im happy :D

Thanks 4 the help.
