hey all,

i was wondering what was the maximum number of cpus that NT 4 server can handle. I know it can do two, but there is talk around here that a "special" edition can do up to 4? is this true and which "edition" will do 4?

TIA

I think it was "Enterprise" edition of Win2K that could do four CPU's, but I'm not sure if that applied to NT4.

Let's check..
NT Enterprise Edition

And it takes 8 CPU's!
Enterprise Edition Features at a Glance

But what about plain Jayne NT4?
I can't find it. I see references to 4-processor MIPS machines though, but nothing beyond 2-CPU x86 machines....

I believe Enterprise can do 8 CPUs, though I could be wrong.

Anyhow, there are supposed to be special OEM versions that allow for up to 32 processors, but I have yet to see this.

NT 4.0 Server can support 4 CPUs, just like Win2000 Server. Not sure about NT4 EE though. NT4 and 2K are pretty similar in that regard.

Windows NT Workstation = 2 CPU's MAX

Windows NT Server = 4 CPU's MAX

Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition = 8 CPU's MAX for RETAIL VERSION

Several companies wrote their own HAL (hardware abstraction layer) to support more than 8 CPUs. Compaq wrote one along with Unisys and ALR (Advanced Logic Research) and a few others. Compaqs does like 32 I believe and ALR's does 6.

I think the special version you're thinking of is Win2K Datacenter Server.

Its only available when you buy certain systems such as Compaq's Proliant ML 770.
