I am not ashamed to admit I still subscribe and read Maximum PC.

Even though they (the editors) are a tad biased, I find it the most informative and interesting reading material while on the toilet. :)

the worst thing was boot merged with the mag family pc. So it became maximum PC. i had a free subscriptions to both through frequent flier miles, so i ended up getting two issues a month. Needless to say boot got all toned down since family pc was such a wussy magazine.

bah, nothing worse than dishonest reviews, especially when people are counting on your opinion to make decisions on their next upgrade :|

Man, I never read this mag(used to go too boot's site once a while though), but if half of this is true, then thats pathetic.

But... but... the paper's so shiny and smooth... That must feel awful and smear something terrible!
On the other hand, you certainly won't be reading it any more... :p

I agree completely... the magazine has gone Waaaaayyy downhill.
About the only time I buy a magazine these days is if I'm away from the computer for an extended period of time (and need a fix) or if it's got a REALLY good CD! (Like PC Gamer a few months back with 10 full games like X-Com, etc.)

I wrote a letter to Jon Phillips, Editor in Chief last night, and he gave me a reply thru email 5 minutes ago. :)

<< We've responded to this issue in our own Commport letters section. We've responded in our own online forums. We've even ran NEW benchmarks, and posted them on our website (unfortunately, I cannot find the URL for you right now, but the new tests bear us out). I should note that AMD has never protested our evalauation of Duron (where in the past they have taken issue with other criticisms). I should also note that it's not our policy to jump on other boards to defend ourselves. If people want to argue about Maximum PC ethics with a Maximum PC editor, they can come to our own forums, or write me directly. I will respond to direct letters, as I'm doing so now.

As for Mr. PC Pro, his diatribe is so completely filled with fallacious logic, wild leaps of assumption, and ad hominem attacks, I won't even grace his posting with a response. He apparently is launching a website, and his lead innaugural "content" is his case against Maximum PC. I think that before he actually begins delivering real content -- that is, benchmark analysis -- he might want to review the tenets of the scientific method. At Maximum PC, we do our best to follow the essential scientific method, and sometimes we stumble. But we do try our best. But a paragraph by paragraph analysis of Mr. PC Pro's letter shows that Mr. PC Pro is grasping for any straw he can get his hand on, falling into many fallacy traps along the way.

In the end, I'm not going to enter a pissing war with Mr. PC Pro, or any of the anandtech faithful who equate a change in editorial direction with out-and-out graft or ineptitude. It's a free country: If they don't like the magazine, they don't have to buy it.

Thanks for writing,

Jon

I have to laugh at this. This CS major on my floor has a pretty big ego, and always thinks he knows the facts about computer hardware (which we argue about all the time). He often cites Maximum PC as a reference of his knowledge... :) Now I know why he's so full of it.
(He thinks Maximum PC is the authority for reviews.)

Whats the point in even going to the MBS forum if he is still not going to admit that they are pro intel no matter what other sites benchmarks get put out.

Of course your not going to contest what he said because what Mr. Pc pro quoted from you is aboslute truth. Perfect Example of a zealot if i haven't seen one myself.

Keep that kind of attitude up and you'll be in the same path of PC computing. 7.99 for some TP is just way to much, why don't they just name The Crap MaximumDell or MaximumGutB or something.

rofl, i just have to comment on how the so called "kings of overclocking" attempted to overclock a duron using fsb instead of multipliers. Then again this may have been a review done a long time ago. Regardless, the durons started at 100 mhz fsb whereas the celery they used started at 66. Big difference.

<< I get physically sick just thinking about the thousands of people reading Maximum PC and other mainstream computer magazines thinking that they offer some semblance of the truth. I'm serious. I feel nauseous right now. >>

You stole the words right out of my mouth.
