I want to make a gearbox capable of dealing with about 100 pound-feet of torque at ~100RPM with a high degree of efficiency. I'm assuming there's some measurement for themaximum force (in pounds) I can safely apply to the teeth of the cogs, but I do not know what it is. I'd like to be able to use a 2" x 1/2" wide cog for the input, but the 600 pounds of force on the teeth does seem like quite a lot, even for a helical gear in an oil bath.
