I am running an athlon 1.2 ghz (non-overclocked, due to motherboard limitations)
So, I got the chrome orb (http://www.thermaltake.com/).. Webpage says it supports up to 1.3 ghz.. However, I am getting close to 60C or 160F.. Is that good? The numbers look scary!

That is way too high! You shouldn't be over ~50ºC Try reseating your processor and heatsink and reapplying thermal compound. (I recommend Arctic Silver)

Considering that the c-orb really isn't good for 1.2ghz, I would say get a new heatsink with a .82C/W you'd get a cpu CORE temp around 45-50C over ambient case temp.

Check my sig for more info on htat.

Secondly, your "reading" temps are very high. i would be very worried at that high a speed knowing that reading temps are very off at high overclocks.

My Athlon 1.2ghz overclocked to 1.3ghz runs at 51C at full load according to my Asus A7V. I am using the superorb BTW

I can tell you that Chrome Orb will not support 1.3G up front.
1.3G processor has 71W. C/W for Chrome Orb is 0.81c/w
AMD calls for 42C ambient temp inside the chassis.
Under full load, the CPU temp will rise 57.5C (71W * 0.81C/W = 57.5C)

57.5C + 42C = 99.5C

Maximum core temp for 1.1, 1.2 1.3G processor is 95C. Chrome Orb will miss the AMD Spec by 4.5C.

1.2G is 66W processor. Use the same calculation, the temp under full load with 42C ambient will be 95.5C. Just over the maximum temp!!

But this does not mean you will fry your processor. If you keep your ambient temp inside the chassis well below 42C, you can still get away with your existing setup.

I woudln't bother with AS if you have a c-orb. i'd go ahead and put the money toward a globalwin or taisol heatsink first.

Know of any powerful but quiet fans? My friend has a huge fan that's louder than the hard drive.. kinda sucks if you have to listen to all the time.. i don't plan to overclock my 1.2 btw.

I would definitely upgrade your HSF, that's very hot, and possibly dangerous for your CPU. A Taisol CGK742092 would be good, or a GlobalWin FOP32-1.

Just where do you put the thermal paste?
Just on the metal retangular part of the amd chip?
