'K... call me daft... does anyone have a link or explanation as for the whole storyline of the game? I've played it through a few times, but I still haven't managed to figure out exactly why his wife was killed, etc.

<obvious spoiler warning>

It's been a while since I've played, but if I remember right, Mrs. Payne ended up almost discovering Project Valkyrie through her job. The OD'd drugies were then sent by Horne to kill Mrs. Payne, in order to keep the project secret.

Project Valkyrie, in the beginning, was a project made to come up with a "wonder drug" to motivate troops into continuing to fight, be happy, ect. Howeve, the project was canceled for obvious reasons, but Horne continued the project, knowing that she could make a fortune off of it.

Enter Max Payne:

After his wife was killed, he went into the DEA to get revenge. He started into the gritty underworld of New York, and began working his way up. He managed to get a major lead though once the bank robbery happened, which lead him to the Don's(can't remember his last name) henchmen, the Finito's. Once there, he read the letter, and began learning about how they were distributing the drug, Valkyre. You then work up the line, killing off higher and higher level henchmen, and learning more about how the drug is distributed, ect.

However, once Max reaches the Don and gets some info out of him, he's caught by Horne, who tries to make sure her project continues. However, Payne finds out where she's going right before he goes out cold, and then heads to her hideout. Once there, he begins crawling through the place up until he reaches the lab, where he finds out about what Valkyre is, why his wife was killed, ect. He then leaves, and begins working on killing Horne, who keeps escaping.

This ultimately leads up to Max being contacted by Alfred(the one eyed man, who hires out Payne, and is also mentioned in Candy Dawn's diary:Q), who reveals that Horne has been blackmailing him and his group to keep the project secret. Payne then continues on, raiding Horne's "legit" company, and ends up killing her.

Side Stories:

The Russian mobster was a nemesis of the Don, as they vied for the same territory. He's your friend because he wants the Don dead, and your boat back.

Mona/Lisa are the Don's two daughters. Max spends the latter chapters being infatuated with Mona, who is killed by Horne or Horne's henchmen, furthering his rage.

BB(Backstabbing Bastard) was the other guy you reported to before Alex was killed. He set up Alex's death, and has completely sold out to the mafia.

Hopefully, this covers the story for you; but it's been a while since I've played it, so I may have missed a detail or two.

It's been awhile since I finished it, but I thought that the V-head junkies were sent to a house picked at random for a real-world situation test, which happened to be his house.

By the way, I strongly recommend the True matrix mod. VERY cool. Kung fu, unlimited bullet time, flipping all over the place, jumping off the walls, an added level of the Matrix lobby (VERY WELL DONE), etc.....
You can get it at FilePlanet

I'll check the storyboard later, but I'm pretty sure Mrs. Payne was specificly picked as a test subject.
