Max Payne 2: Filtering at its worst in current gen ATI cards. PICS included

Finally go around to playing Max Payne 2 after all this time. It cost me 10 bucks although it was was labelled 50.

Anyway, if someone want to see the best example to show the capabilities of 6800's excellent image quality on High Quality compared to Quality. As well as see the texture aliasing that ATI users of X800 series aren't able to get rid of.

It was horrible, of course, what I didn't realize was that it wasn't all ATI. Rent got me into a thought process. The reason why it is so horrible, is because in the game, there is a setting called Texture sharpening. This setting acts like an Nvidia setting called Negative LOD Bias and sharpens texture at the cost of texture aliasing.

Here is the image with Teture Sharpening at default. It isn't nearly as bad, but it's still there and Nvidia still clears it up with High Quality setting.

This is with the default texture sharpening and AI OFF.

These pictures were taken with all in game settings on high. Anisotropic for filtering and 4x AA enabled.

Not even by disabling Catalyst AI? Is this with or without AF?

Edit: Well, that looks like a worst-case texture, with its fine, repeating pattern of alternating lines (especially when they're horizontal). I agree, though, that both IHVs should allow you to disable filtering shortcuts if you so desire, just for pathological cases like this.

ATI has got out of hand with their filtering optimsations, but I bet ATI Tray Tools "full triliniar" option would take care of that.

If the game has an option for trilinear then turn it on.

But yeah, it is nice nVidia allows their optimizations to be turned off.

So why dont you post some pics of nvidia cards in the same scene? I cant really compare these to anything.

Give me a bit and I'll get some pics.

Thanks for the comparison screens. My question is, if it's bad using bilinear without AF, how does the picture change when you enable (or force) full trilinear, and AF?

Also, from looking at those screens, makes me want to play Max Payne 2 again...🙂

Rent: Do this:

All in game settings at High including Anistropic Filtering + 4xAA. But in the actual game, not the config window, make sure texture sharpening is set to default.

In the drivers Default everything except, change:

Quality to High Quality
Force Trilinear

click apply.

make sure all optimizations are off at the bottom.

And change negative LOD Bias to Clamp.

Apply, then OK.

the aliasing doesn't even look like it's there. Let me find out where the ladder is and check with the without texture sharpening.

Nope, aliasing didn't show up until you got closer to the ladder.

Try it another area with a full stretch of carpet in front of you. It's also easier to spot if the threads on the carpet are horizontal to your view.

I'm gonna buy a 6600 later this week so that I can make full comparisons.

Where have you been? You can't get optimzation free AF with Nvidia's drivers either, and the reason is quite simply that websites I won't bother to name like to push out a bunch of benchmark numbers with little to no regard for image quality; and hence, ATI and Nvidia got into a huge optimsation battle where they both sacrificed image quality that was never talked about for framerate which got all the publicity. Fortunatly, at least ATI Tray Tools can get rid of that crap on a Radeon; I really recomend you give it a try.

I just said that it doesn't fix the problem. When I had my 6600GT, it had no problem giving me excellent image quality.

NV's AF isn't optimization free. But Nvidia is able to get cleaner textures without aliasing on it just like the 9800 Pro used to do.

You mean you edited your post while I was writing mine, and you did it again, lucky i checked this time. 😉

Anyway, that sucks that the option doesn't solve the issue in Max Payne 2, I suppose I was on a 9700pro when I played the game but since I got my x800xt-pe I haven't run across a filtering issue that ATI Tray Tools couldn't fix. I can show you some crap I can't get rid of on my 6800gt though if you like.
