Max OC of 3400+ CG Clawhammer & 3400+ Newcastle on air?

Hi All,

Recently purchased a 3400+ Clawhammer and was sent a CO stepping core. I will be sending it back and was about to hunt down a 3400+ CG Clawhammer when I started reading posts about the 3400+ Newcastles OCing much better. I know the differences in L2 cache and stock clock speeds.

I'm curious what folks have gotten out of these two CPUs while OCing w/ air cooling. If the Newcastle can hold it's 200 MHz advantage while OCed on air then it seems like the better buy for a gaming (primarily) system. If they both top out at close to the same speed then the 3400+ Clawhammer seems like the better buy given it's 1MB L2 cache. I don't want to get into watercooling at this point. Both chips are selling for about the same price right now.

Whatever I get will be partnered w/ the following: DFI LANparty UT nF3, 1 GB (2x512) PDP 3200+XBXL, BFG GeForce 6800 OC and a 160 GB Western Digital SATA HDD.

Thanks for the information!

What I've read about the early (CO) stepping Clawhammers leaves a lot to be desired. They do not OC well and have quite a few memory compatibility issues. I've heard the newer CG stepping cores (all Newcastles and later-produced Clawhammers) are much more "memory friendly" and tend to OC better.

What you've read about overclocking the chips may be true but not what you read about the memory compatibility issues. I have a C0 Clawhammer and it is flawless.

Thanks guys. I'm still looking for data from folks that have OCed these 2 CPUs. I found some benchmarks comparing a 3200+ Clawhammer to a 3200+ Newcastle on stock settings, but haven't found any direct comparison of Clawhammers & Newcastles OCed on air. I'm curious if the Newcastles can keep their clock speed advantage.

Megatomic it's good to hear you haven't had memory issues with your CO Clawhammer. I don't know how many different sticks you've tried with it. I may have to keep my CO Clawhammer because FuturePowerPC is giving me the run around on returning it. Nothing like having a 15-day return policy on a CPU when it takes them 17 days to ship it to me! At this time, I don't recommend doing business with them. I know, I know, it shoulda bought it from newegg.

So, anybody got some benchies for these CPUs? Thanks.

John

Hey John, I actually bought my CPU from the same place. I got it for $219 shipped and it arrived in just 3 days. I was actually pretty pleased with them...

I wonder why it took them 17 days to get your chip to you? 😕

Hey Megatomic,

I wish I knew why. It took them a week from the order date to get it UPS for shipping. When I made the purchase it was supposedly in stock. I live on the West Coast, but still 17 days is pathetic. They want to ding me 15% for a restocking fee because I was outside the 15-day window. Jeez I wonder why I didn't make that 15-day limit? I let them know I wanted to return it within 24 hours of receiving it.

The really interesting thing is if you go hunt for retail boxed CPU return info on their site it pretty much doesn't exist! At least I can't find it. There's wording about CPUs being an exception to their standard warranty & return policies, but no specifics about what the limitations on CPUs are. Nothing about a 15-day limit. Nothing about a 15% restocking. If anybody can send me a link to these policies I'd love to see it. I've asked them twice to show me where they are, but in both replies they haven't mentioned it. I wouldn't be surprised if they magically appear on their site in the next couple of days. There was also no mention of these policies on the emailed "checkout" invoice or the sparse invoice they sent with the CPU.

When I told them I wanted to return or exchange it I made of point of asking if there were any fees or other deductions beyond a deduction for the original shipping which was free. The only thing they said in their reply was to send it back and there would be a $5.00 deduction for their cost to ship it to me. Sounded reasonable to me.

Now it looks like I'm stuck with the choice of keeping it (I really wanted to build my system this weekend) or sticking to my guns and waiting to hear from them on Monday. They have conveniently avoided me this afternoon. I would take about a $45.00 hit (shipping costs & restocking fee) if they don't back down and honor their earlier communication. I won't pay it!

One other interesting note...they dropped the price on these 3400+ Clawhammers back to $219, but kept the 3400+ Newcastles at $235. A day or two ago they were both at $235. When I purchased in mid-November they were both $219. Looks like they might want to unload their CO stepped cores.

OK this was cathartic. Thanks for hearing me out and have a great weekend.

hmm... that'd be an interesting comparison but a 3200+ NC and CH perform about the same... it's only in certain aps like encoding does the CH out shine the NC due to its larger cache.

i've done some tests a while back of a 3200+ nc and ch at stock they pretty much performed the same

i am currently waiting for a 3400+ NC from RMA from the egg... should be here next week 🙂 hoping for a 0.6 NC CG (post week 32).
