We've changed it on the exchange side by using the system manager, but users' outlooks still give the error "the attachment size exceeds the allowable limit" when trying to attach something larger. Are we going to have to change a setting in Outlook?

Or, do I just need to restart the Exchange server?

It's not an Outlook thing and you shouldnt have to restart Exchange.

Max size can however be set in several differant spots; here are some places to check (all in ESM):
1. For the whole Organization: Global Settings>Message Delivery>Properties>Default
2. For the whole Routing Group check your routing group SMTP connectors
3. For single servers: Server>Protocols>SMTP (on each individual server)

also, wait about 15 minutes for the setting to replicate around to everything.

 or more if it's a large org

I was assuming it's a very small org due to the nature of the question and the "just restart the Exchange server" comment.

Yup, it's small.

We have maybe 25 users. And I'm the defacto computer guy. Give me desktop and I'm your man, but I don't know all these server programs.

Anyway, the settings I changed were under

Global Settings>Message Delivery>Properties>Default

I changed all three of them all to "no limit" for now.

Still get the same error in Outlook.

It would help to know how big of file you are talking about.

Are you sending it internally? If externally the receivers server might have limits on their end blocking the email/attachments.

Have you restarted the users computers just to make sure?

10meg zip file, trying to email it to an outside addy.

Here's how it plays out:

Open outlook, open new message, click on add attachment, select file to add, click OK, get "The attachment exceeds the allowable limit" message.

I've also added my own pop email addy to my outlook, using an external SMTP server and when I select that address to send from it also does not work, which makes me question if it's all of a sudden a problem w/ Outlook, not Exchange.

I have not restarted the server b/c we're still open. I'll maybe try that tonight.

So to clarify you're getting that error prior to actually hitting the send button in Outlook? If that's the case it's not an Exchange setting, you should see Exchange limitation messages in the form of an NDR. You would also see limits from external recepients' servers in the form of an NDR.

Please clarify if the error message is in the form of an NDR or not. If it is an NDR please post the contents here so we can review it for you.

Right, the message I'm getting happens before I can even attach the message in outlook, which makes me think that it must be an Outlook setting issue.

The error message is exactly "The attachment exceeds the allowable limit"

Try right clicking on the file in Explorer -> Send To -> Mail Recipient

See if that works.

Try deleting some items in the Sent Items and Deleted Items folder to clean up. They might be exceeding their allowed disk space.

Ok, so here's what I ended up doing.

Rebooted the computer running exchange. It now works.
