Max amount of RAM you can put in one PC?

I saw PC motherboard supporting 4 ram slots up to 512MB per slot. That's 2GB ram in total. Is that the highest amount you can put inside one pc nowaday?

Mine takes 2GB, have 1GB and two slots open for expansion

The Tyan board in my Flaming P3 Duallies thread in hot deals can take more, has 8 DIMM slots!

Maximum addressable amount of memory with an x86 (32-bits) architecture is 4 GB.

x86-64 (e.g., Clawhammer, Sledgehammer) CPUs are capable of addressing much larger amounts of memory.

It will also depend on the OS. With Win 9x over 512 can be a problem but with XP and 2K you can do up to 4 gb.

Elledan,

Incorrect, but thanks for playing. X86 allows for 36bit(64gig) memory(pentium pro and better) addressing. However applications are only allowed to access it in 4 gig pages. Only high end server chipsets would recognize more than 4 gig.

Eh? I'm confused...you're the first person to state that an x86 CPU can address more than 4 GB. I've always heard that the limit is 4 GB.
