*snicker* i get to tell my bf i told him so. just because they took the case doesn't mean it would get the stay overturned.

Hopefully they will find their ways into the CFL and show the world they can play, and then get picked up by an NFL team.

#1 - Clarett isn't even in school anymore. He dropped out in the winter, so the NCAA didn't screw him

#2 - Rules are rules. If I was going to sacrifice my college eligibility by declaring for the draft, I would be DAMNED sure that I was actually going to be eligible for it. Williams should have been a little smarter. Getting into the draft was never a sure thing for an underclassmen.

Clarett dropped out because he was going to transfer to a Division 2 school, if his court case failed. He won the court case in district court, so he then declared for the draft.

As for Williams, he has a legi tcase to be made eligible again, and it can happen. Clarrett is screwed because of his past infractions.

Williams declared elligible when underclassmen were allowed elligible for the draft. I don't think he was expecting for this to happen.

Of course he declared when they were eligible. But he had to know he was taking a calculated risk that any decision that was made in favor of underclassmen in the draft could be overturned.

He took a chance by declaring and he got burned. The same could have been said if he decided NOT to declare and the courts went the other way with their decision.

that wouldve been funny, but i bet he wouldve been picked up in the 3rd or 4th.

RBs are very thin this year.

but, he wouldnt have amounted to crap in the NFL.

Mike Williams' situation i find laughable as well.

and he expects sympathy...he just saw $ signs in his eyes.

ha ha.

Mike Williams situation isnt funny. Hes being screwed over by the NFL and the NCAA. He has just as good of chance as any of the other top 5 WRs in the NFL draft to be extremely successufl.

As for Clarett, HE WOULD have been drafted, but probably not till the late 2nd round or early 3rd.

Williams situation is funny. He gambled and lost. he knew the rules but he was betting that clarrett would win. eh wrong! to bad though. but still funny.

I have NO sympathy for him. you gamble and lose it is your fault. Nobody elses. I hope they dont let him play next year. pitty he will still be able to go to school.

Thats not quite accurate. They wait so long because the death penalty is a slow process. It has to go through, the state system, then the federal system. This was a federal court case, that time was of an issue. It went from dristrict, to appeals, to a priliminary ruling by the Supreme Court. This took one Supreme Court justice, 3 days, and not even three full days, probably ~6-8 hours total. This was not the full 9, it was solely Ginsberg.

Clarett was never going to transfer. If he did, the school that he transferred to would have to declare him ineligible and seek reinstatement through the NCAA.

Well Clarett did win initially, how can you blame Williams for making his decision based on the ruling at the time. Any reasonable person in Williams' shoes would have done everything he could to get out of college and into the NFL. He's ready to play, teams are willing to pay him millions for it, so why shouldn't he get paid.

The NFL will lose on this eventually. They just appealed quickly so he wouldn't be allowed entry in to this years draft. I have no problem with underclassmen in the draft. It won't turn into an NBA situation, as less players are developed enough to go early, but some, like Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams are.

I disagree with the statements that Maurice wouldn't amount to anything, or even "he wouldn't get picked". He had a good workout, and showed good knowledge of blocking schemes and offensive schemes. Mike Williams not entering the draft screws teams looking to draft a WR. Less depth means less chances a good WR will fall to the later picks.

I'm pissed at the NFL about this, among other things.

I wouldn't count on this not turning into the NBA. At one point the NBA had fundementals, now it's mostly one on one ugly offensive basketball. It's a direct result of inexperienced, untrained young players coming into the league. I read an article a couple months ago where the journalist stated that the top HS football player in America (a center out of Colorado) was ready for the NFL. It will only take one or two to make it, then the draft gets flooded with 17 & 18 year olds. Skill levels come down, play suffers and before you know it, we're watching a HS football game on Monday Night Football.

I'm all for capitalism, but this scenario has always sat uneasily for me.

Sorry, but I disagree. Less players will be ready for the NFL than in the NBA. NFL teams will know this. Also, the NFL has much larger rosters, which will allow teams to draft the extremely skilled young players, and put them on practice squads or have them as backups. It would be very rare for a younger player to come in an make an impact right away.

Also, so often now, you get 24-25 year olds in the draft, due to redshirts and the such. Why can't it work the other way? When a 25 year old gets drafted, depending on position, you get 10-12 years of solid play out of that player. Say an 18 year old gets drafted, you'd get a good 18-20 years of play, again, depending on position.

Initially yes, fewer players will be ready, but the NBA doesn't draft based just on "readiness", they draft a lot on potential. They don't want to be the team that passed on the next Kobe. NFL teams will eventually start doing the same and before you know it the league will be inundated with potential.

And for your second argument, I don't buy that you will get 18-20 years of steady play for an 18 year old. You said it yourself, those guys would be on the practice squad. They can't contribute play time if they're on the practice squad.

Listen, I don't fault the kid for wanting to get into the draft if he could, but he HAD to know that there was a chance this could happen. Like I said, he took a calculated risk and he lost.

He may still be chosen in a supplemental draft. And the worst-case scenario is that he sits out a year and gets drafted next year.

Yeah, the USC coach said he would have no problem welcoming him back another year. The NCAA will probably say ok as well. After all he did not start this crap.

Sualbadguy, Usually I agree with you, but you sound like a pi$$ed off USC fan right now. Williams did gamble. Yes, Clarett initially won his battle, but everyone knew the NFL was going to appeal. he could have easily waited until that was over, then enter the supplemental draft at worse. He lost, now he will have to wait. That's the rules.

but rules are rules. he doesnt deserve to have the rules bent for him. he hired an agent.

are you sure youre not just moaning because the chiefs cant get a WR now since everyone has moved up a slot?

Yeah, the rules are the rules. That doesn't mean its right to laugh at him and say you are happy he won't play, and happy he won't have a job. Thats like laughing at someone who doesn't get a promotion, or fails an interview. The "pity he will still be able to go to school" statement sent me over the edge, thats just heartless.

Oh, I dislike USC and the entire Pac-10, and could give a crap less about OSU too. The quality at WR in the draft drops 1 notch because of Williams not being eligible, too.

But how does that make sense? He hired an agent, but he did not play a snap of pro ball, and has not got paid a dime. Still an amateur in my eyes. Admit it, the NCAA has archaic and nonsensical rules.

oh I'm sorry.
I guess i should be pissed off that he tried to around the rules and LOST.

Nobody forced him to take the risk. yes clarret did win but if Williams or the people advising him aren't bright enough to figure out that the NFL was going to appeal and that the NFL may win then he deserves everything he got.

Him whining about it now is useless. He has nothing to whine about! worse thing that is going to happen is he is going to continue school and get drafted next year. oh boy he has to wait a year to play in the NFL oh noess!

pft. again he gambled and lost. Many people gamble with there future and lose and don't whine about it. life sucks and he better get used to it.

It wouldnt be bending the rules. There are regulations and guidelines for one to be ruled NCAA eligible again. Williams has a legit shot at playing next season.

Williams had marketing deals with card companies paying him around $200K. He signed cards to be distriubted in an NFL football card set and he signed the NFLPA Group Licensing Agreement that allows his name and image to be used on NFL products.

He was 100% sure he was going to get drafted. He got burned.

mike williams wouldve been drafted first round.
im not debating that fact.
the fact of the matter is what would be stopping any player from 'testing the waters'.
hire an agent, declare himself eligible for the draft and then go back to the CFB team after he gets shot down? or he didnt think he got taken high enough or throws an archie/eli manning fit. well i dont want to go to the (insert team name).
how is that fair to his college program?

if i were a USC football 'fan' or Mike Williams' teammates or Carroll i would be extremely pissed at his greed. He has probably cost his team a chance at a legit national championship.
that is if you consider the pac10 a legit conference.

Pac-10 isn't a legit conference..but,

If he does go to the NFL draft, i'd say he should be inelligible for the NCAA. If he gets barred from it (like this year), i'd say let him play again.
