Mattress topper question

Due to circumstances that are too emo to post, my fiance and I moved to a new apartment with very little notice and very little funding. We're buying furniture as we can afford it and, since beds are pretty crucial, we ended up purchasing a queen mattress that wasn't very comfortable (but at a price point we could afford).

Cut to just a week later and my back and neck are quite sore and I'm trying to think of ways to tame this overly firm mattress dilemma. One solution I thought of was perhaps getting a cheap feather bed from overstock (down mattress topper) and then throwing a 1 or 2 inch memory foam pad over that - would that work?

I'd try the feather bed alone but the reviews point to the cheap feathers "poking" through - would the memory foam be a solution to the pokes? Would the foam supplement the cushiness of the feather bed or would they kinda cancel each other out?

I know this isn't a mattress forum but you guys seem to known any and everything ;)

Yes, it will help but it may not be enough to solve the issue completely. In any case, it is the cheapest work around to make it better.

Just get a thicker foam. Make sure you get a heavier one, as it will be denser and last longer. You could go el-cheapo and buy a king size and trim to fit. (then you have a little left over for the dog or something). I bought one from amazon when it was on sale.

Put the foam on top of the mattress and then put something on top of it to give your skin room to breathe, otherwise you'll get sweaty

Yeh, I don't know what it is about memory foam, but that stuff makes me sweat like no other. I have an air matress that has a memory foam topper. Used that a few nights in between homes and woke up drenched.

FWIW, I actually find the basic egg shell foam toppers more comfortable than the memory foam. I also don't sweat any where as much. And they cost 1/10th the price.

I have one of those all foam things from costco. It gets hot as it doesn't breathe well at all. I put a down topper on top and it made things a lot better.

Switch your idea around and put the foam under the down topper.

I had a memory foam mattress topper that had a down filled top built in. It made a hard futon bearable to sleep on. I slept on that thing for several years.

QFT...or better sheets over the featherbed.

Even when I was broke I could find a decent mattress though.

A bit OT, but...anyone had success with memory foam pillows? I have a cheap memory foam mattress, but my neck still kills all the time, and I wondered if one of those could be the solution.
