I don't know how they can portray it as "smart" because pres. pardons are quite specific in their coverage, not truly blanket pardons like the ignorant believe. The pardon specifies the crime(s) being pardoned. So there's that. Don't think there's such a thing as a "blanket" pardon that absolves one of anything/everything in one fell swoop.
