Some good compensation as well as extra cap space.... Good stuff. All hail the Patriots!

Some good compensation???? Cassell for a 2nd rounder is crazy cheap.

They'll have to pay him 15 million too.

Umm, I don't think that's how it works. More than likely they negotiated a contract with him before the trade was completed.

correct, so long as the Pats are willing to negotiate, they can agree to whatever terms they want.

This is pretty shocking to me, I'm guessing Brady hasn't had a chance to really show off if his knee is fine yet, and given his age and Cassel's knowledge of the offense and his performances last year, you figure at worst Matt would've been heralded as the QB of the future..if not a potential replacement for Brady this year.

Plus, Tyler Thigpen was showing some flashes last year and having him compete with Brodie Croyle for the starting job this year would've given the Chiefs a fairly decent option at QB.

It'll be interesting to see though how Cassel performs in a fresh new non-Belichick system that he hasn't been playing under for all his years without Moss/Welker/Faulk..

Brady's age? 31 is old now?

Instead of $14 million sitting on the bench they now have $14 million to spend on starters.

Does the broncos has a coach yet? with champ as a DB and dawkins as a safety, their pass coverage D looks pretty good; don't know about their Run coverage D.

I don't give a cr@p that Cassell got traded...but am still shocked as hail. The flexibility to fill holes could pay huge dividends, but in the day of the cardboard quarterbacks, its a HUGE risk. Winning your games while a starting qb is out could mean home field advantage in the playoffs, or making the playoffs altogether.

I'm sure they're trading for some 1st picks on some worthy O-line to keep Brady from getting injured. Time to plug up those holes.

They should have waited a bit longer. Supposedly, Detroit and TB got into the bidding late but couldn't come up with deal in time. There was no need to make the trade so quickly.

None of the QBs coming out in the draft are rated higher than Cassel who threw for 3,600 yards, 21 TDs in his first season in the NFL as a starter but a couple will be selected in the first round and get signed to huge contracts.

Atlanta got more from Houston for Matt Schaub.

Josh McDaniels is the Head coach for the Broncos.

now cutler wanted out of denver:

Source: Spurned Cutler wants to be traded

February 28, 2009 7:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The Denver Broncos may have seriously damaged their relationship with quarterback Jay Cutler.

A source close to the situation confirmed the Broncos were trying to acquire quarterback Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots by dangling Cutler, their Pro Bowl quarterback.

The trade talk infuriated Cutler, who now wants to leave the Broncos.

The source said the proposed trade was a three-way deal that would have sent Cassel to Denver to reunite with former Patriots offensive coordinator and new Denver head coach Josh McDaniels, Cutler to Tampa Bay and compensation from Tampa Bay to New England.

Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel were traded Saturday to Denver's AFC West rival Kansas City for a second-round pick.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Broncos pursued the trade because McDaniels wanted to be reunited with Cassel, who excelled under McDaniels last season as an injury replacement for Tom Brady.

In the aftermath of the trade Saturday, Cutler asked permission to find his own trade partner but was denied by the Broncos, according to the source. Cutler is still hopeful he will be traded because he feels betrayed by McDaniels, the source said.

The source said Denver is no longer interested in dealing Cutler, who made the Pro Bowl in 2008, his second full season as a starter. The source said Tampa Bay, Detroit and Chicago could be possible destinations if Cutler gets his way and is traded. The source pointed out that until Cutler heard about the trade talks Saturday, he was completely happy playing for McDaniels and being in Denver.

It may be difficult for Denver to trade Cutler now because there are no other quality quarterbacks available. It would be silly to trade him to the Lions for the No. 1 overall pick and try to draft Georgia's Matthew Stafford or USC's Mark Sanchez. Neither of those players is a known commodity, while Cutler has blossomed into one of the NFL's better quarterbacks.

Denver has to regain Cutler's trust immediately or this could turn into one of the NFL's uglier situations.

The source said that while Denver hopes to smooth the situation over, Cutler probably will seek to depart Denver as a restricted free agent in two years. Cutler signed a six-year deal with the Broncos after he was drafted with the No. 11 overall pick in 2006.

The source said Cutler was hurt by the news that McDaniels wanted to start his Denver tenure with Cassel and not him.

"The relationship has been tarnished," the source said. "I think it's beyond repair."

Cutler expressed displeasure when Denver fired coach Mike Shanahan in December. However, he has been publicly supportive of McDaniels and had several good meetings with the coach in the weeks since McDaniels took over. The source said Cutler was confused by the trade talk.

"It's like a knife to Jay's heart," the source said. "It will be hard for him to get past this."

McDaniels will be able to get past this issue, but it may take some time. The Broncos sold McDaniels' hiring as a chance for Cutler to flourish. Seven weeks later, the pairing has taken a sudden and potentially disastrous turn.

Or maybe some younger defense.

New England put the franchise tag on Cassell knowing that teams would be gunning for him.
They have Brady coming back, busted knee or not he's better than 90% of the QBs in the league.
Anyone with half an NFL brain knew Cassell was leaving the Patriots this year.

Matt Cassell is likely going to struggle in KC. Simply put, they are an inferior program to the Patriots.
Cassell may put up some half decent numbers, but I'm willing to bet they aren't a playoff caliber team yet.

New England is making moves to pick up some young talent they need to develop to keep up with teams on the move like Miami.

Meanwhile, my Vikes pass on Cassell, and gets Sage Rosenfels instead. Somebody shoot me, or better yet, shoot Childress.

Yeah I think the Lions could have afforded to give up a much higher draft pick and could have used both Vrabel and Cassel.

My guess is they are still going to suck for the foreseeable future. Cassel would have been a great move for them with Dante as the veteran on the bench calling plays and QB coaching a bit.

There 1st round draft could have then been used on a RB or a front line guy..... ugh makes me sick. This is why I'm a Pats fan, hopefully Brady stays healthy all season.

you're an idiot. of course KC isn't going from 2-14 to the playoffs. KC is building a team for the future, and Rome wasn't built overnight.

Croyle is a bust and Thigpen has completely developed into a starting NFL QB.

Croyle isn't a bust. He's just liable to get busted up. I've never seen a QB more injury prone than Croyle. And it's not that he isn't tough. He's just highly injury prone. He was never starting NFL QB material. 2nd string maybe. 3rd string at best.

But good deal for the Chiefs. Taking Cassell is a surer bet than drafting a QB. Just a matter of making sure he's in the right system for his skills and he has some talent around him on offense.
