Matt Cassell gets traded to the Chiefs

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/2...lete-trade-for-cassel/

This is pretty shocking to me, I'm guessing Brady hasn't had a chance to really show off if his knee is fine yet, and given his age and Cassel's knowledge of the offense and his performances last year, you figure at worst Matt would've been heralded as the QB of the future..if not a potential replacement for Brady this year.

Plus, Tyler Thigpen was showing some flashes last year and having him compete with Brodie Croyle for the starting job this year would've given the Chiefs a fairly decent option at QB.

It'll be interesting to see though how Cassel performs in a fresh new non-Belichick system that he hasn't been playing under for all his years without Moss/Welker/Faulk..

Croyle is a bust and Thigpen has completely developed into a starting NFL QB.

QB of the future? No way. He had one good year with 2 top receivers and 1 good one. Tom Brady did it with less.....

Wow. I wonder how much the chiefs gave up for that trade.

Current rumor is KC's 2nd round pick(2nd in the round) and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2010. However, compensation for Vrabel hasn't been revealed yet.

edit - rumor has it now a third team is involved.

Shouldn't be. I have two words for you: Scott Pioli
And you know the Pats got the Chief's left nut for Cassell. It'll be interesting to see the terms of this trade when all is said and done.

I think they have to give up a whole lot more than that.

Cassell had the fanchise tag placed on him unless I am much mistaken. He is a non-exclusive franchise player meaning that, if he were traded, the Chiefs must give up 2x 1st Round Draft picks.

Trading for a franchised player may be one of the dumbest moves ever!

I think the Chiefs got a whole lot better

should be interesting next season since I think the AFC West is pretty weak. will the Broncos find a defense? can the Chargers O line block? I'm pretty confident the Raiders are going to suck, and while the Chargers have all the talent on paper, I believe the 2009 NFL season will be very much like the 2008 NFL season for the AFC West teams (except I expect the Chiefs to compete alongside the Broncos and Chargers)

No, the Chiefs would only give up two first rounders if they offered Cassell a contract and the Patriots declined to match it.

Since he is being traded, the two teams are free to agree on whatever terms they like.

Franchise tagged player negotiating with other teams != franchise player being traded

I'm not sure what the quarterback situation in New England is because I thought the Brady was out for another year. Trading Cassel away says that the Patriots are willing to gamble with whatever draft picks they get, or possible that Brady will be back sooner than later. Franchising Cassel costs the Pats $14 million, and on top of whatever Brady is payed, that could be disastrous for the team payroll. If Brady comes back to start and Cassel sits, it's even worse. My guess is the Pats felt the trade-off between Cassel and the whatever they get from the Chiefs will be worth it. I hope so.

They also traded Vrabel, so they will be compensated for that as well. The Patriots may want to revamp their defense with fresh players, as many of them are getting older.

Supposedly they are getting a 2nd rounder for Cassell + Vrabel, and maybe a 2010 conditional pick. Doesn't sound like they are getting the "Chief's left nut" at all.

Croyle should get his walking papers today. That guy is worthless.

I would have been fine with going into the season with Thigpen.

If Carl and Herm were still around, we would have traded Thigpen now and be stuck with Croyle as backup.

Some good compensation as well as extra cap space.... Good stuff. All hail the Patriots!

Some good compensation???? Cassell for a 2nd rounder is crazy cheap.

Last I heard is a secound rounder this season, and a pick next season, but it's all speculation at this point. I'm pleased if they get a couple 2nd rounders for this.

I admire the job Cassel did this year, but he has not answered the big question, can he throw deep. If you check his numbers the guy had very, very few 25 yard plus completions (excluding catch and run).
Cassel played behind a top notch offensive line, had great receivers and great coaching.
I think he's a huge question mark still. Especially for team like the Chiefs who have none of these.

I'm not to sure what to think about this. Our offensive line is still complete crap, so I would rather they fix that then go and get a franchise QB next season or so. Thigpen seemed decent to me, and I would have liked to see him get another shot but that seems unlikely to happen now.
