What do you care? The card is great and will do exactly what you want a $400 card to do, no?

Didn't say I cared. I was just pointing it out.

Oh I'm sorry, for a minute there I thought that you implied not being satisfied by the card's peformance. My mistake.

No one in their right mind would drop $400 for a card that can't outperform a $140 one.

I've already bought it. :)

Hmm... lets see. Beta drivers versus generation what now of optimized Geforce drivers?

There's almost not doubt that performance will increase with new drivers, BUT how the heck does that change the fact that RIGHT NOW, this $400 card is not worth it? And the card is going to be shipped tomorrow (25th), so the drivers being used in the benchies are probably the same or very similar to the drivers being sold w/ the card.

It's matrox's problem if they can't keep up with the driver game.

I was wondering why they wouldn't want reviews of the card released when the card was officially announced last week.

This whole thread is mildly amusing. This kind of thread is started for practically every new computer hardware product that hasn't reached store shelves yet.

Tell me about it, the card sucks. Even with beta drivers, cards are suppose to show true potential to be anything special. And picture quality is a moot point, if anyone has seen the GF4/R8500 image quality they would know damn well that 2D is good enough already.

FWIW- the review was written by Lars from Rivastation. :roll

Lars wrote a very fair and rather favorable review of the Radeon 8500, and he has shown himself to not be particuraly biased against other manufacturers, despite being in charge of an nVidia fansite. i'm sure that the results obtained were the actual results, and i'm sure that the test was fairly done.

Sure, future drivers will improve it but not THAT much. R8500's performance has been improving dramatically with drivers, but even if the Parhelia improved as much as the R8500 (doubtful), cards less than half it's price would still eat it for breakfast. Not sure why Matrox would ever target the 3D market if they knew they couldn't cut it.

unless, of course, its a professional 3D card, in which case it is about 2/3 the price of a fireGL 8800.

You are an a-hole, if you don't like what you read leave who ever wrote it alone.

I've seen a Geforce and I know damn well that the image quality is lacking as compared to a Matrox product. Especially in 2D.

Even our fearless leader Anand admitted that Matrox is top dog in 2D.

Personally, I'm going to wait for Anand's review before I pass any judgement on this card. I hope it lives up to some of the hype. In any event, I can't wait to see what the R300 brings to the table. Judging by those doom3 pics, it looks great.

Here's to graphics card competition!

Where was the Radeon 8500 performance compared to the Geforce when it was released?

That's right, severely lacking.

Where is it now? Nearly on par.

Shows what a little driver work can do.

Yeah but isn't the Parhelia (ugh i hate that name!! almost as bad as GeForce) behind R8500's initial performance? :Q C'mon amish, just admit it that Matrox will never cut it in the game performance world. They should've stayed with 2D and advertised their great 2D instead of marketing their 3D which will never stand up (especially in the coming months when we see nVidia's and ATI's latest offerings which will severely smoke the Parhelia at a lower introductory price.

Never cut it in the gaming market? I'm still using my freaking G400 for god's sake! It plays games just fine.
