I know, it is only a single head version, it has only 16 Mb of video memory, but....
For the money it will be a perfect card for your friend who is a web desinger or who is working long hours with Photoshop....
Matrox is releasing drivers on a regular basis, there are no compatibility problems and G400 is a fairly recent chip.....
Not for 3D gaming, but perfect for el chipo desingerbox/office computer... bump it
These will go out fast..

Ugh... It is not the shipped price.
But the geeks are charging a reasonable rate for shipping..like 7 bucks extra for shipping to Michigan
Edited a thread...

You might also want to add that it's used. Still not a bad price though if you want really sharp 2d.

I have one of these in my main development box. One of the best 2D video cards ever made. I think I'll order another one to keep as a spare in case the one I'm using now dies...

Isn't that what warranties are for? 😀

Anyone know if this card will work in the newer P4 motherboards like the ASUS P4PE which only supports 1.1v AGP cards? I'm not sure how to tell the difference between the two, but I know one of my older Rage 128 Pro cards was keyed in such a way that it would not work in the P4PE's AGP slot.

Maybe. (Assuming you mean 1.5v) Matrox says:

17. Do Matrox boards support the new AGP Pro specification in Pentium 4 systems?

1. Our G550, G450, and most* G400-based AGP products support the AGP Pro specification, running in either 1.5v or 3.3v AGP slots. (*Millennium G400 boards with a "4A" in the part number, as well as all Marvel G400-TV boards, support 1.5v AGP Pro slots ).

And a word from Intel

Is the 2d text on these cards razor sharp? Would it be noticeably better than a ATI card? If it is, I might just grab one for an office machine that I have and replace a ATI Rage Pro 16 mb.

TIA,

Sal

There's not a huge difference in 2D quality between the G400 and Radeon, definitely not worth swapping cards for.

This is an excellent deal. Would work perfectly in an office machine or for someone who just cruises the interent. I had one way back then and remember the outstanding 2d.

Just got the two cards I ordered. Even though they're marked 'used' on compgeeks.com ... I think they are in fact brand new. Both cards did not show any signs of use, and they are both marked with CPQ part numbers, which suggests that these are OEM Matrox G400s used by in Compaq servers (hence the NLX plate). The cards did both come with the NLX plate attached and the standard connector loose inside the box. Switching them was super easy, especially if you have a screwdriver with the right sized piece to fit those nuts.

Haven't tested either card yet, but will be sometime this week or next.

Definitely a sweet deal for $19.00, even more so if your cards are brand new like mine!

maybe "surplus". does compgeeks have that as a possible type?

teamexcess (where i've purchased my last two matrox cards over the last two years) is another place that sells surplus (and used?) equipment.

basically, the oem (compac, ibm, hp, dell, etc) bought a large number of these cards for use in systems and extra for warranty work (to replace cards that fail). the system(s) that these cards were originally purchased for (to be a part of) are probably becoming end-of-lifed (ie they are leaving the warranty period) so the oem no longer has any need for them (and doesn't want the hassle of selling the surplus). they are cheap because the oem didn't pay much for them originally (probably purchasing in lots of thousands), they are out-dated (compared to mainsteam), and have little to no warranty.

technology-wise they are usually a little out-of-date. condition-wise, they are brand new. but warranty-wise, they are "used", ie they have very short warranties, usually only provided by the seller (not the manufacturer). i've had good luck with surplus, but i'm sure to always buy reliable brands (which should be built-to-last, so no need for a warranty) with good short term return policies and/or warranties (in case the card is doa or flaky).

I had a 32MB Single head once...for some crackheaded reason it would only run in AGP1X mode. But it ran games just fine. Wacky =P It was hella fast at D3D back in the day though...when I upgraded to the Radeon certain D3D games ran slower(although it was probably the horrible ATI drivers lol)

g400's are very nice cards..too bad this is only a single head card. Im loving my dual head. newegg had the dual head refurbs for like 30 bucks a bit ago, too bad they are oos.
